I've had some doubts recently, not about my preferences, or lifestyle choices, but about this site and more importantly web safetey as a whole.
Today i googled myself with quite suprising results! It seems that even my music choices are not private. I have to say it's quite scary the wealth of information about ourselves out there on the ether.
For a while i considered actually deleting my profile from here and other places that i don't consider secure. I've not been online much since last tuesday, not realising i was avoiding the issue of having to decide what to do with some information i was given on tuesday afternoon, regarding internet privacy. Perhaps i've been niaeve about it, knowing me more than likely.
The conclusion i've come to in my five day hiatus from the net is:
I'm lucky, i don't have to hide who i am and my preferences, unlike some of you here. Whilst not shouting my inclinations from the rooftops, i can and have made my nearest and dearest aware of my preferences. It will not shock anyone who know's me well enough to know that i'm involved in sites like this one and others.
For those of you that do have to hide, did you know that you can google a profile name and be taken straight to the page, no sigining in as a guest either, Or you can google and place and time of a munch and also be directed straight to the ic page event listing if it's there! That's on this site! Not one of the other's i frequent.
I don't know about anyone else, but personally i find this worrying!

That's why putting up identifiable photos is optional. My name doesn't come up, certainly not for the first few google pages. It's all about religion, German bands and art. I may have to complain.

I quite agree, everything on this site being open to anyone who uses google, and now twitter and arsebook, even people already banned from the site for harrasment etc, is bonkers.

Don't forget ic tweets your event listings for anyone on twitter to follow. To thine own self be true

This quite often comes up on IC - Quick search reveals the following; http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/posts/267570/ Seems that the only way to keep off the radar of google is NOT to have a profile. If there is something that you do not want anybody to know the best plan is to KEEP IT OFF THE INTERNET.
I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

this comes up every so often ... yes you can google your nic and i.c. blogs photos and such comes up .. easy ways to stop this are either use a nic not connected with your vanilla life ... dont put you e mail addys on here ... dont link anything from vanilla or just dont join sites but if you hide things people can use them ...always be open ... and they have no ammo to use chaos mayhem and desaster......my work here is done

In most cases the only information about you on the internet is what you have put there yourself. If you don't want it made public knowledge, to all and sundry, then don't make it available by posting it anywhere on the 'net. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Although l am pretty open about myself l don't ever use my full name on the net so when l have actually googled me then nothing shows but my net name shows a wealth of info about me.... Everyone should try googling themself's to see what turns up. Don't make them a priority, when they only make you an option...

You will also find other information, often so called hidden information only available to say members of sites not through guest access, can be found by choosing 'cached' page option on google.

Thanks everyone though i have to reiterate, it's not my profile really that's the problem, as i "don't" have to hide. The issue is more to do with anyone being able to access this site without sigining in (even as a guest!), through a google link!! Considering the nature of this site, surely this isn't good? I haven't used my real name here or anywhere apart from facebook, which is a nilla profile and not linked to the kink profiles....so googling my 'real' name is different..
