I was going to post that the Banshees version of "Helter Skelter" was better than the Beatles original, but listening to both has brought me down on the side of the original.

So, any good examples of cover versions that are better than the originals ?

I'll probably get shot for saying this but I much prefer Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of Dear Prudence to The Beatles' original.

So do I and I'm a big fan of the Beatles. This is the only Beatles cover that I like better than the original.

Sid Vicious's version of 'My Way' - much more entertaining that the original.

(But Placebo's 'Running up the Hill' better than Kate Bush? Noooooo)

Placebo and the Futureheads should be stripped, raped and strangled for their Bush desecration. Placebo should then have their corpses buggered for their version of '20th Century Boy'.

I will plump for:

Johnny Cash, 'Hurt'.

Jeff Walker and Die Fluffers, 'Keep On Rockin' in the Free World'.

Florence and the Machine, 'You've Got the Love'.

Klaxons, 'It's Not Over Yet'.

Madness, 'It Must Be Love'.

The Revolting Cocks, 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy'.

Ministry, 'Lay Lady Lay'.

Machine Head, 'Message in a Bottle'.

The Wildhearts, 'White Lies'.

Type O Negative, 'Cinnamon Girl'.

Faith No More, 'Midnight Cowboy'.

I've always loved the Human League's version of :

'You've lost that lovin' feeling'

Not sure that is shared, but it was 'of the moment' for me.

No just no, the Reznor original sums up the meaning to the song so much better. It's supposed to be a slow song reflecting the pain that it's about. Johnny Cash' version is twice as fast and doesn't have the soul that is in the original. The haunting musical arrangement of the NIN original helps to take you to the place he was in when the song was written.

I like KD Lang, but the best cover of Hallelujah has to be the Jeff Buckley studio version off the Grace album.

Not sure if anyone saw Christy Moore at Glastonbury this year but his final encore was a cover of Jackson Browne's "Before the Deluge" that just made me cry.

This. Especially the slightly discordant arpeggios.

While we're on the subject of NIN, someone mentioned Dead Souls. I really enjoyed it when I first heard it on the Crow soundtrack, but I was always a little confused as to why it was billed as NIN because when I checked the notes, every instrument was played by Trent (the disgustingly talented bastard).

Because Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails, he only has other musicians when playing live as he cant play everything on his own then.
