That is an interesting view point but i guess its moot unless you have rich parents. If i was a rich mans son and he didnt leave me money, I would prob be rather pissed!

My father's original will left everything to my mother. He wasn't wealthy at all when it was written but he was scared of dying young and leaving her in penury with 4 kids to bring up. Fast forward a couple of decades - he was ill and due for major surgery, we had all become adults and he decided to update his will. His solicitor was duly instructed and in the meantime his operation was brought forward.

He died in ITU and the new will arrived for signing the day after he died. It left the house to my mother outright and the rest (a fairly substantial amount) to be divided equally among her and us children. My mother was not legally obliged to honour his wishes as the old will still applied, and she didn't - she kept every penny for herself. That says much about her own ethics, but my own view was "what you never had, you never miss". Twenty-five years ago I nearly inherited £50k, a lot of money then. My mother is still busy spending her way through it - there will be nothing left by the time she dies, which won't be long now.

I don't care.

Everything I have, I've earned with my own sweat. I'm proud of that. I have no kids to leave anything to. Apart from bequeathing a few small personal items to my nephew and nieces, the lot will be going to causes.

TBH, married people don't leave money to their kids on the first death. On the second, yes - but whilst their spouse is alive? Not usually.

Ah semen. What is it about that ridiculous white secretion that pulls down the corners of an Englishman's mouth?

Soz - writing quickly! "First death" = first spouse to die. "Second death" = second spouse to die....

I am sorry to here that, it is a sad story. Greed really can make uglyness out of actions. I dont think i would have taken the same path as you did if I had the same situation as you describe.

commitment is like ham and eggs. the chicken makes a contribution, the pig makes a commitment.

My father only had the one spouse. And, actually, his decision to revise his will once we were all adults was not that unusual. Plenty of parents do the same when their children have grown up and there's no longer the need to ensure everything goes to the spouse so they have support to raise young children.

I also believe spouses shouldn't routinely expect to inherit when their partner dies, if there are no children.

Years before her death she said that she wouldn't leave anything to her children as she had built up her business from nothing and they could do the same if they wanted to.

That is mean, not everybody has the talent to build business empire.

Maybe not, but they're still capable of earning their own living. Children should never expect an inheritance, regardless of how wealthy or not the parents may be.

Children should never expect to rely on their parents' pocket money as adults. But what puzzles me, is what where this family's plans? Anita Roddick's children must have grown up with many of the privileges of their family's financial status. Did they start from scratch with absolutely no help from this assets as adults? Did they go to Uni, get a student loan and struggle for ten years to pay it off, while their mother was the owner of The Body Shop? Oh, come on!

And even if this was the case, I can't believe that their mother's wealth never helped them in life. As an example, you must have some good financial backing run a shop in the middle of Convent Garden that I doubt is very profitable.

Well, quite. But unless the Roddick children speak out we may never know.

I'd be willing to put money on them having been helped financially when younger.

Now I don't know what kind of qualifications Ilya Fleet has as a designer but I can make you a good spreader bar in whatever colour or length you like for about £195 less! We can call it the "Ilyka Bargain spreader bar"
