Appointing her from the beginning was like having the pope work within childcare. Or Hannibal Lecter giving lessons on veganism. (someone else invented these two perfect analogies, I am not the brainchild on this). I honestly can't say that I see any what so ever prospect for all-inclusive lgbtqi-rights that is not based upon the homely heterosexist shit I'm so fucking tired of. Even less so BDSM-rights.
Fine if they repeal certain damaging legislation, but it is important to remember that sexual rights also has to do with womens rights, anti-racism, class, ability-rights and so on.
If I get more house-wifey 'look how awesome SamCam is and wow, she managed to breed, how great!' shoved down my throat I'm seriously considering leaving the country. And come back with an army.
There,rant over.

This is one of those things where I think we need to judge her on not what she did in her past but on what she does in the future. It's in the water baby, it's in the pills that pick you up It's in the water baby, it's in the special way we fuck It's in the water baby, it's in your family tree It's in the water baby, it's between you and me - B.Molko

In other words: let's ignore her 'crimes' and set her free to commit more? That's stupid. Why are you acting like a dragon?

Maybe her job is to continue the Labour parties version of equality by making sure no one has any rights (except politicians), and thus making most of us equal. I always behave. I just don't specify how.

Well since she has been appointed has she said or done anything that could be construed as being wrong? Its an attitude like this is why I personally limit my interaction with the LGBT community, as a group of people who have a very eclectic mix of sexuality and gender. There are a percentage of them who are in my opinion very narrow minded and not willing to let people show that they have changed. People change, sure. But let me make my point a little clearer: A knife murderer doesn't get given a shiny new set of knives and a target rich environment. They get sent to prison, and get psychiatric help. Or even: If someone has a history of punching me in the face whenever I see them, I'm going to have them arrested and stay out of their way; not invite them home for tea and biscuits. I really hope she's changed, but before she get's given the keys to an office of power, perhaps she should demonstrate that she has changed? I don't think 'once a homophobe, always a homophobe', but before I'll believe someone has changed they better provide some evidence that they're worth my trust. I agree that there is narrow mindedness in the way some people treat others, but that's not the position I'm coming from. On the subject of the call out on being narrow minded, isn't it a little narrow minded to trust that because she got the position she must be worthy of it? I think the most open minded position is to question everything, and my question is: Why has someone who has demonstrated a history of voting against equality for sexualities being given the position of 'minister for equality'? Why are you acting like a dragon? Edited 15 May 10, 4:43 PM by Liefsome

Seriously, why do I have the obligation to 'give people a chance' to fuck things up? When is the time to act then? How many fuck ups does she need to do? Who are going to judge the severity? Cause we don't need to care about her obvious transphobia, or homophobia. Is that really a smart thing to do? A couple of years wrongdoing does not disappear because a nutter appoints her to a position which she are not capable of being in since she don't know what fucking equality is. Of course I'm mad! Do you know what else gets me mad? This is not directed at you directly, more in general: That there seem to be so many people going on and on and on about BDSM-rights, but as soon as we are supposed to speak up against anything else what so ever, the knit-picking begin. It may be trans-policies, it may be feminism, lgbt-rights, what ever.. I don't mean that we should be eternally grateful for a feminist-movement, nor that I feel solidarity with every single case that is dropped in my lap. I'm feeling more or less reluctant to take up any BDSM-activism, simply because there is so much negligence out there from people who think we should just be able to shag/not shag in any fucking single way and that those rights are the most important ones. But why should I stand on a barricade to defend rights of others that cannot even stand up for me? Barricade can mean anything btw.. It is my rights, and my responsibilities too, that is why I react.... FFS, I'm imagining this is how feminist lesbian SMers felt when they were marginalized by the general feminist movement.Or even the lesbians in the earlier feminist movement. Not that women's rights, sexual rights, gender politics, queer politics, anti-racism, anti-classism etc has aaaaaaanything to do with eachother. Not at all. *irony* http://moreinches.wordpress.com Edited 16 May 10, 2:39 AM by Hedwig
