Just wondering what people's views might be. If SM is a primary interest then is everything very black and white about personal preferences whereas if DS or BD are the primary interests then do SM personal preferences vary?

Of course they can  It's not necessarily a polar state. You can enjoy inflicting pain on others even if you like receiving it too. They most definitely can. I know at least 2 who seem to be at pretty extreme ends of the spectrum (or both spectrums - if you'd call it a spectrum - er that's another discussion me thinks!)
