Well my old work shoes finally gave up the ghost yesterday. Surprisingly enough not a hole in the sole but rather a bloody big hole on the side of the shoe. So Master decided that today we HAD to go and replace them. It will be a wrench as those shoes have lasted me longer than any pair of shoes that i can remember and they are like old friends.

However we set off this morning to a little place we know that sells shoes for the less standard person. They do ladies shoes in size 13 for goodness sake :-) not that i hasten to add i need them that size, though there is nothing wrong with big feet either, no my problem is that my feet are rather wide so i need them wide fitting.

Anyway we were well on our way to our little place when we ended up in a very long traffic jam. We were so far back in the queue we had no idea what was causing it. Unfortunately we eventually found out. Some poor sod had been involved in a road accident and the police and the fire brigade were there. It must have been pretty bad as the car was on its side and the roof had been cut off by the firemen. Thankfully the casualty(s) had already gone so no blood and gore but a sad sight non the less.

Once we were past that we continued on to our destination. Of course it was raining, but that was ok it was not too bad. We got out of the car, intending to have a cup of tea before tackling the shoe shop only to see loads of people just hanging around talking. Rather strange given the rain. When we approached the cafe we discovered the shutters were down, but through the windows we could see quite a few of the tables with cups and saucers and meals half eaten. Marie Celeste or what?

Nothing that sinister or mysterious, rather the fire alarm had gone off and everyone had been ushered outside. So there we were standing in the rain wondering what to do. Just across from the cafe was a butchers. Rather a nice one as it turned out, and very helpful when we told them what we wanted.

Master has been talking of my baking a ham for a while now, but when i tried to buy one in our local Morrisons i was informed that they only do big hams at Christmas and Easter. But at this butchers we were luckier, we stood and watched the guy string it together beautifully and then cut off the amount that we wanted.

Leaving the butchers several kilos heavier in my bag we came out to see a fire engine parked on the tarmac outside the cafe. The same one as it turned out as had been at the road accident.

Now i know a few of the guys in the fire service and as luck would have it there was a couple on the crew that i recognised, so i pumped (not a pun honest :-D) them about what was going on.

It turned out that it was a false alarm caused by cooking fumes. Thankfully they had allowed people back into the cafe but not the shopping area as they were still checking it out.

So Master and i treated ourselves to a wonderful cup of tea and a fantastic piece of coffee walnut cake. The cake however defeated us both but it was totally delicious.

So suitably replete we headed off to the shoe store. Not an easy task, and as it turned out quite an expensive one. But eventually we did manage to find a pair that fitted the bill. Black, flat and completely plain. The nearest i could get actually has a velco fastening cross over piece but if they cut up rough at work then i will just play the diabetic card and tell them that i need this style for the condition.

And now we are back home, the ham is bubbling away on the cooker and will go in the oven suitably glazed later ready for dinner tomorrow and i have made a beautiful cauliflower cheese to go with it.

All in all its been a good day so far. i hope that everyone else has a fantastic weekend

be well and be happy

cally :-)

thanks Geoff, yes we are. Though the timing had to be right to avoid the sicky feeling and of course Master couldnt make it anywhere without his stick - but other than that it was a lovely outing :-)
