Cancer......

That one word can cause more fear, hurt and worry than anything else i can think off, most of us have known people affected by it..My father being one of its victims.. He ignored the signs till it was too late ... And everyone should know most cancers are curable if treated early enough......I cant think of anyone I know who's life hasn't been touched by it.....

The purpose of this blog is to ask people not to bury their heads in the sand when they find a lump thinking it'll go away if you ignore it...... Please don't think..

A)I don't want to bother the Dr ..

B)they have more important things to do ..

C).Its my imagination..

D)I'll wait and see what happens..

You find a lump... you keep checking it... touching it.. poking it ... Think its nothing.. It'll go away.. If its still there next month you'll mibbie go to the Dr....Next month you don't contact the Dr.. You continue to check but ignore the gnawing doubt at the back of your head, that wee inner voice that says go get it checked....You dont want to cause a fuss, months pass.....While trying to convince yourself its nothing, you get yourself in a knot, with many sleepless nights worrying.. Eventually you bite the bullet...... You go to the Dr .. The Dr sends you for tests and after a few stressful hours your given the all clear.....

A year down the line you find another lump..You think back and feel confident that its the same as last time... So your initial panic isn't as strong as last time.... The pressure and worry aren't as bad as last time.. Your confident its nothing sinister..... Like last time, you keep checking it...

Like last time you ignore that wee inner voice ..

Like last time you go through some sleepless nights ......

Like last time, you let a few months pass......

Like last time, you eventually bite the bullet and go to the Dr. Like last time you go for tests.....Only this time its not like last time.....Its not all clear......

The news hits you square in the stomach... You enter a dream world...You now have to face the people you love and tell them...You know the words are going to tear them apart... Who do you tell first? What happens next? A million questions course through your body.....All the time the main one's ...Who do you tell first?

The one thing that can change the final outcome is how early you seek medical advice....This means less invasive treatment,,,

Please seek proper medical advice as soon as you find anything that shouldn't be there. The Dr wont think you've wasted their time. It can make a huge difference to the outcome.Seek advice as soon as you can.No one will think you are silly or wasting their time.Confide in a friend if your worried about going to the Dr, ask them to come with you but whatever you do. Please don't just bury your head in the sand.....

edited to add i have changed the setting to allow replies after recieving a memo. If anyone else can confirm what i have said please feel free to add... If it makes even one person seek advice sooner than they might have..

It is not just lumps............It is feelings, niggly lower back ache you can't shift, low level permanent stomach ache, that you put down to age and not a brilliant diet.

My Pa had pancreatic cancer died on boxing day, v v difficult to diagnose but he had the symptoms for nearly 6 months before going to the Dr, and then another 18 months before death. There is a remote possibility something could have been done for him.

Thanks for the blog, hopefully it might help someone.

My Dad died of prostate cancer, he also ignored the signs. They did operate in the end but it was too late as the cancer had spread throughout his body. Even 25 years on and still missing him like crazy i wish with all my heart that i had pushed him harder to get him to go to the doctors in the first instance. i couldnt agree with you more. ANYTHING that even makes you think it could be the big C needs investigating. Medicine has advanced so much more now and early diagnosis can make all the difference.

Oh so true, there is so much more help, support, and awareness of the big C.I admire the sentiment of the person who kicked this off, it can only be a good thing to highlight the + side of the dreaded C!

This cannot be said enough. ... I had experienced a dull ache in my left testicle for about a week, I knew it was ... different .... but an ache can mean anything can't it? At the end of that week I took the "bull by the horns" (so to speak) and had a tentative and clumsy self examination in the shower. The ache complained bitterly when I fondled a previously undiscovered lump on the side of the testicle. Alone, I carried the knowledge of this discovery for three days until I mentioned it to my wife. Her attitude? "You stupid Man! See a doctor. Tomorrow!" ...... followed by a good deal of sympathy and warming words ... but with the firm warning to have it seen to; ASAP.

I did. I was referred to a hospital and had an ultrasound scan. In less than a week I was sitting opposite a Naval Doctor who informed me that it was his intention to “… have that off before it misbehaves itself.” … That's counselling, Military style for you. I later discovered that the lump was in the very early stages of being cancerous and that complete removal of the testicle was a safer bet than excising the lump alone.

That was almost thirteen years ago to the day.

What if I had followed my first instinct and not examined it? Or said nothing to anyone after finding the lump? 'Men's Health' and Testicular Cancer (TC) were not the buzz words that they are today and it is my own particular conviction that had I done differently I would not be here to add my own little sixpence worth.

Oh and chaps .... there is life with one testicle. You don't even walk lop-sided.

It's perhaps worth adding to this that I have recently been investigated for bowel cancer. I had one or two of the lesser symptoms but I chatted to my GP about it anyway. I had an appointment with a specialist within 10 days who ordered a further, more detailed, X-ray examination which was carried out within fourteen days. I have a non-malignant polyp and a rectal fistula which will be addressed by the surgeon's knife on Thursday. At no time did I feel as if I was wasting anyone's time or did I feel as if I was being 'dramatic'. (I'll save the drama for the post op care that will if nothing else keep me out of the pub for a few days. It will make a change for a Dom to have a sore backside for a change). :)
