Afraid there are few cures for a sick windows machine basically either use the restore program or reinstall.
are we talking XP or Vista here? Let's agree on this. You don't tell me about your problems with Windows and I wont tell you about Linux Edited 12 Apr 10, 1:24 PM by Outrider

Blue Screen is usually hardware related.
Ensure the device has the latest updates from HP's support site. A clean install of Windows after removing the data may well be the best option. S -- To err is human but to really fowl things up requires a computer - anon

Checkout what is says on the blue screen, to see if you can find out the cause. Google is your friend. Is it still blue screening in safe mode? Does it get into windows at all? I encounter a lot of computers that just have corrupted system files and so running chkdsk can some times fix it, and if not then booting up off a windows disc and going for the 2nd repair option usually fixes it. However that's mainly in Windows XP, Windows 7 has some more repair features and if you have Vista, well then there's your problem right there. I always behave. I just don't specify how.

What he said. Enter you PC model and exact message details of anything that appears. I also find that uninstalling anything that starts with "Windows Live..." can help too, as can removing things that auto update things. It's worth trying to actually find out what the problem is rather than just reinstall Windows. If you have the patience to do some detective work then you will know how to avoid it coming back. As others have suggested, a blue screen is often hardware related so try chkdsk, and I think someone mentioned a memory checker too. As you have a HP laptop then go into the system setup and run the diagnostics. I work on several models of HP laptops so I can give you more information if you need it. I also found a Microsoft provided product called the Vista Recovery CD so get yourself one of those if you haven't already done so. Let me know how you get on. steve If there's something you'd like to try, If there's something you'd like to try, Ask me I won't say no, how could I? - The Smiths Edited 13 Apr 10, 7:53 AM by clubslut

Well I ran chkdsk and various other utilities including defrag and spy checks and some HP utilities I found and eventually it seemed to become stable. The memory checker found no problem. She has now been using it for some hours with no crashes. So once again thanks to the wonderful community of IC for everyones help. Don't be afraid of dying, be afraid of not living.
