Would like to have a look at the Imperial City one day myself.

Show us an amazing place you would like to see, or perhaps one you have visited already.

(thanks to @Ian_2007 for inspiring this notion)

:)

(NB Pics or Google map refs equally welcome! Or descriptions. Or anything really...)

I fancy the wilds of the knoydart peninsula, it is supposed to be one of the wildest and most stunning areas of Scotland with the highest most westerly mountain in the British Isles. There are no roads, the only access is by boat or foot. I am on the sleeper train on my way there right now.

I have ski toured in the Lyngen Alps in the Norweigan arctic where the mini mountains stick their royal icing little peaks into the hazy blue of the very northern sky and the fjiords lick the land like spillages of golden mercury in the low set afternoon sun. Absolutely empty save for the odd snow hen, and us. So still. It felt completely a world apart.

Places where you can see the layers of history: the dunhuang caves in western china. A massive rock face holding a honey comb of Buddhist monk caves accessed by precarious wooden scaffolding of ladders. The cave interiors richly painted with wall pAintings over centuries of observance. Some caves covered in Cyrillic graffiti and blackened with fires from Russians who escaped over the border during the bolshevic revolution. Signs of continuing worship although illegal In the communist period while I was there.

I'd love to give links to pictures but can't because on my phone in a bunk bed that feels like a mummy sac.

In rome there is a church excavated to four layers of worship. The lowest is the Roman soldiers bull worship and some narrow roman streets. Above that sits a Byzantine chapel, above that a 15th c basilica. As you descend the water courses run faster and the smell of mustiness and time intensifies.

All amazing spots.
