Many Living History folk have more than a nodding acquaintance with bdsm. What bdsm experiences have YOU,as a participant in Living History,re-Enactments and so on, had in this context, and at what kind of event? No, not just afterwards or in the beer tent or B&B,but edgily and deliciously during.... Practise senseless acts of beauty. Edited Sat 3 Apr 10, 11:33 AM by Cassius

A nice thought but I'd have to say no. Well not in public anyway! Somehow I think an authentic torture scene would not go down well - despite the best efforts of Monty Python - the Inquisition was not really family viewing! As to punishment and chastisement. Well, although women were considered chatel so were a lot of men! And women could get a divorce if the punishment was deemed too severe (see 'rule of thumb' et al). Public chastisement was certainly not sexual as the Church kept a close eye on and often had a hand in such punishments. However, you'd be amazed what I've seen in the beer tent after the public have gone! It's amazing the effect plate armour can have on some people....now where did I put my vambraces?!

Well, you have just missed the perfect opportunity for open air scourging, bloodplay and crucifixions – with scarcely an eyebrow being raised. Spring is the season of fecundity and new life. Many of the Old Faiths have rituals and sacrifices connected with the concept. Re-enacting the slaughter of the Lindow Man is a good'un: paint your victim green, dress him/ her in fox-fur bands and a fox 'mask' – there's usually a few worn-out ancient stoles knocking about in charity shops. The assembled company in Iron Age attire – browns and greens. One or two in Druid white robes and some priestesses in black robes. The anointed is then fed a charred bannock (flatbread). The original had a mild hallucinogenic and convulsant in the dough – you may feel that's a bit too far. A couple of snifters will do. Let the victim run. He/ she is now your quarry. Hunt them down on foot across the moors with staffs and cudgels. Fell them, bind them and bring them to a pool surrounded by oaks (or any trees really - you only need one oak). The 'Druids' interrogate them as to any visions they may have had “under the influence”. Then The Anointed is coshed, strangled, suspended by one leg from an oak bough and the throat cut before being thrown into the pool. You can make that last as long as you like. Friends and I have had fun weekends in the Peak District (the original site is just outside Manchester Airport) with this scenario.
Two must-dos: brief the local police fully well beforehand and try to remember you're only pretending "He took a single sip of her pain and found it exquisite" Edited 3 Apr 10, 1:46 PM by Mad_Monk

Far more than I could begin to list... From Norman 'conquests' to Tudor 'courtship' and crude conversations at a distance whilst smiling gently at passing public as threats for the evening laid out in perfect contextual talk. Heh. Happy times. Not so fun at Detling with mixed period.. It can really mess with your head if being promised certain Viking enslavements and a WW2 tank rolls past!

At a medieval event at Lincoln a friend was more than happy to give a demonstration of a scolds bridle in use. Spent the whole afternoon wearing it and being lead around by a rope attached to it

English Civil War. Captured some posh Royalist women in a house others had worked to build. Rounded them up in a rough, Roundhead way and then tied them to chairs, beds and the like. Oh to see them struggle! After a bit we let them go.....a couple complaining that we hadn't been nearly rough enough or tied them up as tightly as we could have done..... It's a perv's life in the New Model Army alright! On the whole human beings want to be good, but not too good and not quite all the time.

I do remember a fetching and very flirty 30yo Tudor dairymaid, who had actually dropped and broken a large ceramic pancheon, telling a member of the public that she was certain to be flogged by her Master that night for the damage. The female punter then somewhat astonished the re-enactor by asking 'Aren't you flogged before bed every night then?'. But she immediately regained her composure, and shot back 'Yes, but with luck tonight's will be twice as hard as usual!'.

Love this kind of thing, would love to see the whipping at the carts tail, and would happily volunteer for a public pelting with filth in the pillory/stocks. Hit me! said the Masachist . . NO! said the Sadist |
