You can't hide it from google. If you don't want the info to be on google, don't post it on IC.

Remove all information from it. Delete all your posts and pictures. Wait until the Google cache has caught up with your actions, which won't take long, then delete the profile. Why don't cash machines have a Gamble button?

Am i alone in thinking this is a bit daft? This is the sort of place where 1. we may wish to be extremely discrete with the outside world and 2. we may wish to be very honest within the IC community. i did not realise that profiles (and web board posts) were effectively public and was "spotted" by someone at work who has been threatening to make the whole thing public ever since. That is why i now post under this name and have abandoned my old profile. This profile has minimal details - and i worry that this makes me look like a troll to the other members. Is there no way IC could change so that only members got to see anything?

Don,t put too much personal information in your profile that may identify you.
Don,t put your face pic on your profile unless you are happy for googlers to see you. Personally I am not bothered who views me, as I do the above. That is my personal preference, google hasn't caught up with my new name (yet). I think it is up to the individual to protect their own identity, if people are going to find you and want to find out about you they will, it just depends how determined they are. jxx

You aren't alone in thinking it is daft, there are many others. I think it is sensible for a few reasons: 1) People find out about events through IC listings. 2) People get BDSM information from finding IC. 3) It drives people to the site, needed to replace the leavers. 4) It teaches people to be careful about what personal information they put online. You can work out a huge amount of information about people from Facebook. IC, by being associated with dodgy pursuits, should get you in the way of preserving your privacy. After all when you sign in you are told that everything you post is available to all.
This has been discussed many times before and each time Admin says No. Fetlife doesn't appear on Google, maybe it is the place for you to be open. Why don't cash machines have a Gamble button?

I take all your points, bohnanza, but I am amongst those who would like to see greater privacy, and that's why I have nuked almost all pics and details, and seldom post much these days (hurray, at last, they all cheer!), certainly not anything personal. It maybe closing the bin lid after the Clanger has bolted, in my case, but I am very sure I am not alone in feeling like that. It's not just the googley thing, it's the way interweb use in general has changed so much in recent years. I started talking about kink online back in the day when a 56k dial up modem was the bollards, when you really had to seek out people to converse with. Now, everyone is broadly banded, wifi'd up and surfing on their phone whilst having a dump/riding home on the bus and so on. Search engines are so much better and faster, the whole nature of the thing has changed. Plus everything here is linked to twitter and arsebook, so instead of a few like minded (well, there has always been trolls!), it's plonked right there, in full view of pretty much the entire planet. And that makes me increasingly uncomfortable about the whole thing. For example, I had a major rant the other night. Really let rip, covered all sorts of stuff, what turns me on, what turns me off, poly-Clangery, all sorts. Then I thought, do I want this visible on twitter and FB? Let alone google? Do I want it read by people banned from IC? No I didn't, so that wee episode of rant therapy stays private. Either way, you are certainly right that people need to be aware, and consider carefully what they share. Openness definitely has its merits, but it does have its downsides too.
Why poison your liver when I could eat it for you?

I get memos on Fetlife from banned people mentioning things I have posted on here. I don't mind that. I do mind the hypocrisy they have of bitching about how shit IC is and how wonderful Fetlife is. If IC is so shit stop reading it. (this wasn't aimed at jahc) Why don't cash machines have a Gamble button?

I agree with what you say. Fact is it's getting more and more difficult to hide identities on the web. Just wait till [or if] HMG's proposal to give everyone their own webpage comes about. Then everyone will be stuffed. Much cheaper than the Identity Card scheme and just as effective. SOS

jahc, quite instructive googling your name, goes back years. You need to be careful what others post about you too, viz:

I think SOMNAMBULENT has hit on a prefect way rund the problem and maybe by accident. If you have a clever and discrete name then Google will find only you. Mermainslutsky returns only 4 hits including two not on IC. Somnambulent returns over 32000. Pick the bones from that. My nick produces 47000 hits. The nick I us on a different site produces 401000 hits. |
