Hmm...I wouldn't go 'that' far...It's good, and at one time it was voted (although I'm not sure by whom) the best film of all time...but I think there's plenty more films out there that have pushed it to one side.

'We' studied it in my media class many years ago and discovered it just follows the basic formula of what a 'good' film should have in it.

The problem I have with Casablanca is Rick. He just whines through most of the film about being betrayed by a woman. Idiot! When Ilsa doesn't turn up, as far as I can remember, his first reaction is to believe the worst of her. Not to wonder if she's safe or what's happened to her. It's all me, me, me.

Then, he goes on to behave in a morally ambiguous way because the love of his life dumped him. Way to go hero.

Meanwhile, blameless Ilsa has stuck by the man who needs her in the fight against facism. She gave up her love (Rick) for a more noble cause. And Rick continues to sit on his fat arse in Casablanca, whining away.

Yes, he does redeem himself in the end, but blimey!

So, although it's a film with many merits, I can't get over the fact that I want to slap Rick around a bit and tell him to grow a set of balls.

A kiss is never just a kiss.

I liked it for its realism, feeling sorry for himself would not be an unusual reaction. Would it be more acceptable if a woman was broken hearteded by a romantic betrayal?

No, I'd want to shake some sense into her if she behaved in a similar fashion. I don't like slapping women ;-) Or men really, cos I'm sub, innit.

My main annoyance lies in the representation of Rick as a 'role model' (and believe me, I know men who regard him as one!). An 'admirable man', when it's actually the female character who behaves honourably, with integrity and bravery. Yet she is simply a foil for his 'suffering' and 'masculinity'.

Yes I know, different times...

Different times indeed and an interesting point you make. Not that I would judge the merits of a film on the characters conduct.

Yep and as an academic I can objectively appreciate the merits the film does possess. However, on a purely personal basis I can't overcome my irritation with Rick. Therefore I cannot enjoy the film. Unless I fantasise about slapping him around a bit (I'm a sub, I'm a sub, I'm a sub...)

Perhaps perfection is in the eye of the beholder in this case.
