Where does one buy chickens? (18)

Ok, so I like having a mini farm in my garden. I want three hens for fresh egg purposes (doh) but I have no idea where to get them. There are no farmers' markets, I don't know anyone with chickens, there are no breeders or anything nearby (after extensive googling) so where the hell do you buy chickens?

Maybe an IC home & garden forum ;-) then I can blog about seeds and compost making etc too :-D

Will keep an eye out, have also thought about hanging up a little ad in local supermarkets. Wonder if that will work?

Do a google search for your nearest large scale egg producer! Rescue battery hens! what better way to start?

Once they start laying less than 4 or 5 eggs a week they kill them.... yet they can keep laying for years! Often if you smile nicely you will get them completely free.

Good place to begin your search > http://littlehenrescue.co.uk/default.aspx

Not joking.

My brother decided to buy chickens to keep for eggs, so he got 4 chickens* and a eggloo and they get 4/5 eggs a day, he loves it. This company came round to my parents house with the hutch and the chicks and taught my bro everything he needed to know.

I have been hunting a little more, no 'free the chickens' stuff to be found here. I have suggested it to a few websites that do a lot of animal protection and pro-organic work, I'll wait and see what comes from that.

I have also gone to something like ebay where pet sales are allowed and found a local farmer selling some chickens for 8 euros per hen so will give him a ring too. Will need the pup to get working on the hen house and run, after he's finished my raised beds :-D

Well you know what they say. "Kinky is using a feather, perverted is using the whole chicken."

Keep up the good work. ;-)

I always behave. I just don't specify how.
