I have always enjoyed the lifelong learning that is to be found from listening to others. It is often, in my experience at least, a painful process, not least because it frequently turns one's preconceptions on their head and leads to much soul-searching. But it is an unavoidable process; the belief that we can achieve a certain level of knowledge and that is sufficient is so flawed as to be risible.
But in tandem with the learning process must be the humility to accept that we are all flawed, that we will all err and that progress may involve hurting either ourselves, or others, or both, in the process. It is regrettable, but sometimes inevitable.
However, with humility comes forgiveness – the ability to forgive others and ourselves and to recognise that we all grow as a result. If we are wise, we can see the opportunities that may be presented, rather than closing the door simply because something hasn't worked out exactly the way we would have expected or liked it to.
