Following on from Sorceror's opening post on the following topic thread: http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/posts/267069/ I would like to ask the question: Why exclude religion and politics? If debates on these subjects are engaged in, in a spirit of total respect for the other party's point of view it is possible to have some very interesting and friendly debates on these subjects. For example: I have recently found myself discussing religion with some people of a fundamentalist Christian persuation. People who believe that God created the world in six days. I am not a fundamentalist Christian. I am an agnostic who believes that the world has been evolving to its current state over a period of about 450 billion years. However, I do have one point of contact with my fundamentalist Christian friends. Although I don't believe that God created the world in six days, I do believe that there is a (relatively) benevolent force guiding the evolution of the world, the galaxies, the whole shebang! I find I can have some very interesting, friendly and animated conversations with my Christian friends, even though our belief systems differ so widely. Indeed, I believe the conversations are so interesting because our belief systems differ so widely! I do not think it is impossible to have friendly religious discussions and debates. All that is required is that each party have respect for the other party's point of view. Also, when it comes to religion, it is necessary to remember that one's own views are the best approximation to reality, based on one's very limited experience. Nobody's religious views are more right than anybody else's. Belief is a private matter and we all come to terms with understanding the nature of reality in our own way. Therefore I do not think religious conversations should be banned. I think only confrontational, rude and aggressive posts should be banned.

these topics aren't banned. are you just not listening? @Informed_Debate exists specifically for this purpose. @BDSM_Temple, furthermore, provides a nurturing space within which to discuss all sorts of spirituality. some days it's hardly worth chewing through the leather straps Edited 20 Mar 10, 7:25 AM by dirtylittlecunt

1) You have been on IC for 2 years... Given past experience, it's not going to happen here anytime soon! 2) Given any thread's ability to wander away from the intent of the OP. All topics can veer into confrontation, rudeness, and aggression. <There is no appropriate smiley to insert here.>

But ID imitates the action of a snail, sadly. It's a super group, but it just don't get the traffic! I think this is one of the major problems with IC. The vision was, I think, to have a site dedicated to the discussion of all things BDSM. But people aren't that one-dimensional. As someone said, if you go to a munch, who discusses BDSM in depth? No-one, unless they're the weirdo in the corner, propositioning n00bies. The main discussion boards are now full of incredibly boring threads about events and post counts. I love IC, and I thank Admin and Mr T for it, but I do wish dat da powers dat be would take on some trusted mods, and re-open the more general discussion boards. I think IC would be all the richer for it. Ah semen. What is it about that ridiculous white secretion that pulls down the corners of an Englishman's mouth?

i know, hence the plugging
the events! good god where did they all come from? it's like mushrooms after rain. it was a relief to be able to unsubscribe from seeing them. there are downsides though. as i think romola said a while back, we loose something in segregation. part of the pleasure of browsing, back in the day, was in what you discovered by accident.

Simply put, if I state my honest opinions on religion or politics, however tactfully I do it, many others will take it as a personal affront. They hold their own views, prejudices, preferences to be sacred and beyond reproach. They will then respond with aggressive 'ad hominem' attacks on my personality, character, record, plausibility, etc. as they cannot logically refute my arguments, or because they've not yet grown out of the playground mentality.

Where do you get 450 billion years from!? It's as mind boggling as some Christians saying the earth is flat and only 6000 years old. |
