How big a job would it be to refine the use of postcodes on IC?

Currently, IC makes use of the first two letters of someone's postcode to determine where they live. However, the first two letters of a postcode can cover a very large area.

I live in Bedford. Because of my MK postcode, people on IC keep telling me I must live in Milton Keynes. Similarly, there must be people who live in parts of Kent, which are a relatively long way from either Dartford or Tonbridge, whom IC assigns to Dartford or Tonbridge, simply because they have got a DA or TN postcode.

Apart from people on IC assuming that one lives in such and such a place, when one has repeatedly told them that one lives somewhere else, if I ask IC to show me contacts in a five mile radius, it does not show me contacts in a five mile radius from my home. It shows me contacts in a five mile radius from the centre of Milton Keynes. Indeed, unless I asked the IC software to show me contact within, say, a 10 mile radius, it would probably exclude other IC members in Bedford, simply because they live more than 5 miles away from the centre of Milton Keynes. Bedford is at least six miles away from the centre of Milton Keynes.

It's all very confusing Admin. Is there no way out of this problem?

I would guess that it was done that way in order to preserve people' privacy.

It's not a good idea to make people too identifiable. I just say London for that reason.

Yeah I live in the area around Huntingdon, but my closest postcodes are the Peterborough or Cambridge ones, even though I live approx 17 miles away from P'boro and about 21 miles from Cambridge, but thats not IC's fault.

..but yeah, it is annoying everyone assuming I live in P'boro as personally I think its a scumhole, ha.

One is of course free not to enter any postcode at all :-)

There's 2 parts to this. One is the complaint that showing (MK) after your name is a bit misleading, and the other is that the search functionality doesn't seem to use the full postcode (which *should* be fairly accurate).

I'd be fine with fixing the second (if it's broken, I live in the centre of my postcode anyway), since I can think of worse case scenarios than only being 20 miles away - Aberystwyth gets a Shrewsbury (SY) postcode and they're 75 miles apart.

Not sure you want postcodes to fix the first though. You could allow users to enter their town somewhere, but that's not easy to display in the place of a 2 character thing. And if you as a user are that bothered by it, why not think about putting it in your profile and/or forum post signature?

And people using rohypnol.

Ah semen. What is it about that ridiculous white secretion that pulls down the corners of an Englishman's mouth?

I have a similar problem, living in St Neots, I have a PE postcode, yet I'm closer to Cambridge than I am Huntingdon, that's just the way the postcodes work, but as nobody has ever heard of St Neots, they don't know where it is and can easily misjudge how far away it is.

IC Distances used to be based on the first part of a postcode, eg MK1. Now they are based on where the Post Office has decreed where the centre of a postal region is. The trouble is some postal region/s centres are nowhere near where the people live, eh PH centre is about 36 miles from Perth and in the middle of nowhere with less than 1,000 people within 10 miles. For a lot of postal regions, eg EC or FY, the distance disparity doesn't matter as the distance given used to always 10 miles or greater. There are some postal regions, eg OX and YO which have large centres of population spread about them, yet are not very close, but IC's distance things tells you they are.

There is an argument to say for some postal regions that is all which is needed, but for others, eg PA, being in the same postal region incurs an 140 mile journey.
