Hi folks, I've been looking into upgrading my now slightly creaky 400D.

Feature wise the 550D and 7D seem 90% the same, but the 7D is significantly more expensive, the question therefore is, is the 7D worth the extra?

Does anyone have either and like to comment about them?

Oh and yes, sticking to Canon because I have quite a few lenses already in a Canon mount.

I use 5D's and I'm quite happy with them. I have no desire to shoot video, if I ever do I'll buy a video camera. The 5D gives a 35 mg tiff, more than adequate for my needs. You might find some new, or nearly new on ebay. Whatever you choose, good luck :). Dave.

I tend to look here. I am hoping to upgrade later this year or later whenever I get some money :)

@Warlockuk has the 7D. I played around with it and *loved* it and may upgrade to that model next. Maybe ask him about why he went with that specific choice?

I use the 40D at present - of the two you mention I would go with the 7D. I find the size of the x00D series to be too small for me and I get the impression (perhaps wrongly) that the bigger x0D series and XD series are a better build quality. If I could afford it I would go for the 5D, but some of my lenses are EF-S rather than EF so I'd have to change those as well.

I'd go back over the other thread we had recently

(15 Mar 10 Need help - which camera to buy? (17) by shibari_mike)

which asked about buying a s/h camera - it depends how much you have to spend, and what sort of thing you want to take.

Just remember that its you that takes the photos, not the camera, and all they do is give you a bit more scope to do your thing in slightly wider situations with slightly better quality :-)

The 7D is an excellent camera, I tried a pre-production model many months ago now, the focusing and metering has been reworked compared with older models. However it didn't convince me to upgrade, I'm still more interested in the 5D Mk II.

The 5D Mk I is a great camera, the full frame sensor can give amazing images, but if you don't have top notch lenses, you won't get the most out of it, you need L quality glass to make the most of it, whereas "crop frame" (APC-S) sensors in the 7D, xxD and xxxD are only using the central area of the lens so you can get away with cheaper optics, more of the image being in the "sweet-spot" than with full frame.

Yet, a top notch lens is by far the best upgrade, when I was still switching from film to digital, my main digital body was a trusty 300D and then 350D (I still keep it as a spare), putting a L series zoom on this, transformed the quality of the images. OK it's not as detailed as modern sensors, but back then it was pretty good, I've got main top shots from this body many years ago. Then I moved to the xxD series.

Personally I find the 5D Mk I a bit long in the tooth now, it's frame rate is slow, and the LCD screen is such old technology now that you can't check for anything like critical focus.

If you can pick up a bargain on eBay, then do, but beware, 99% of people selling them are pros, who have used them to death, rather than "selling my backup camera".

Why not have a look at bargain 30 and 40 or even 50Ds (40D would be my pick, terrific camera).

The Mk II is a fantatsic upgrade, but you won't find it new for cheaper than £1650

I'm waiting before moving to the Mk II until Canon refresh the range later this year, I suspec the Mk III will have the new 7D tech teamed with a full frame.

There are several good comparative reviews of the 5D Mk II and 7D in various magazines, and of course DPReview is the best source.

Don't be seduced by the bells and whistles! Figure out what you want from the camera and have a look around to see what will tick the boxes. You may be surprised.

Don't get caught up by the megapixel hype either! I know a few people who have spent a fortune in order to get a high mexapixel camera, then only produce A4 prints. Very simply, the more mega pixels, the bigger the print size you can produce. My 10D is just 6.3, yet I have produced some very nice 2 metre prints.

Before you decide, try holding the various cameras. How they feel in the hand is very important.

If I needed to upgrade and choose between the 5D and 7D, I'd spend the extra on the 5D.

there are still plenty of people who rush out to buy the latest offering, so have a good look around at second hand bodies. Beware of ebay or any online purchase unless you have held the camera.

Yes, there is some very good interpolating software about, even Photoshop's bicubic does a reasonable job.

Agree with this providing it is only EF lenses you have. If you have any EF-S lenses they wouldn't fit - which means it will be sometime before I upgrade to a 5D :(

Holding out for a 5D MkII is probably too far TBH, I do have a couple of lenses that are APS-C/EF-S "only" so I'd have to replace those as well as the cost of the new body so that seems a bit excessive.

I do actually want to play with the video features as well as stills so just buying better lenses for what I do have won't quite scratch that itch.

Seems that the 7D is getting quite a lot of love so I may well be tempted that way in the end.
