On Being Fat (14)

I was thinking today about how all of a sudden making an effort with the diet has suddenly become much less hard work than it was. I was trying to underpin some of the reasons for it.

Mostly I think it's to do with the fact I forced myself to be "mostly" pretty good for a few weeks. Allowing myself naughty nights and not feeling that all too familiar guilt, followed by well, I've done all this now, so that vanilla slice/donner kebab ain't gonna make much difference. I've made much more of an effort where food is concerned - I've actually thought ahead what I'm going to have for breakfast and lunch the next day. I've eaten more than I can ever remember eating on a regular basis (as opposed to that occasional night of gluttony), and I think about food constantly, I allow myself to get excited about the syn free fish and chips and mushy peas I'm having for tea, or the cooked breakfast I seem to be eating every morning! It's fab, I'm re-educating myself in the way I see food, it's no longer a guilty pleasure, it's now a pleasure that's helping me to get healthier!

What doesn't help and definitely didn't help were the lectures that some people on here seem to think is their mission in life to give. People who are overweight know it, they also know the health risks associated with it, and when some **** with a chip on her shoulder regarding weight issues starts the lecturing, all that happened would be I'd go raid the fridge and think, fuck you, I'll do what the hell I want.

It may not be the best attitude in the world, but its one I think many overweight people identify with. It's almost a teenage type rebellion, and whilst it ultimately does us the most harm, I think talking to others about it is pretty important.

I often hear of the need to educate fat people, but never hear much about how those people plan on educating themselves. I suppose what I am trying to say, is that for many of us it's a very complex topic, that we often struggle to fully understand ourselves, and the last thing we need is someone who really doesn't understand how deep it can be making matters worse for us with "good intentions".

And in an ironic twist of fate this morning, the button on me trousers ejected itself from my waistline as I was bending over to pick up a couple of mint match makers.

However I hadn't settled me trousers properly in place and they are old and the thread didn't look like it wasn't going to last much longer.

I always behave. I just don't specify how.

People do seem to be far more judgmental than they used to be, which is kind of sad. Society in general has become far more secular and accepting in many ways, yet individuals seem to think they have the right to be judge, jury and executioner on the lives of others.

I feel exactly the same about smoking and the more I get nagged at, the more I'm likely to light up and blow (metaphorical) smoke in their faces :-) I made an informed decision - live with it!

As you say, fuck 'em! Do it your own way and for YOU!

Me too with the smoking! And the weight has arrived with the menopause despite my super healthy eating :(

There is not a live and let live any more, just a codex of what is right and proper. Any devience is fine to attack.

Smoking, drinking, obesity. It has become excepable to confront and insult people who choose to live there lives.

It is the media and the goverment that lead these attacks with kids brainwashed over smoking into the foot soldiers of the give up legion, and those appaling get thin shows on the tele that have the same value to society as freak shows.

I wonder how much money is spent on making people stop drinking, smoking, and getting thin compaired to money spent on helping people quit all other drugs.

commitment is like ham and eggs. the chicken makes a contribution, the pig makes a commitment.

If only I'd fastened my belt before bending over I'd have been fine. Still I've checked the button and it's fine, so can be sewn back on. My previous button loss situation was when the plastic in the middle of the button had given way.

I got banned once for laughing when a bouncer ID'd my friend. The funny thing was, Si was 23, the rest of us were about 15...

Everyone has their own beauty, weight has never made me feel less attractive, this is about health for me.
