Forgive me if this is something that has been asked recently, but I was wondering why there is no display of a user's post count next to/underneath their username when they reply to/start a board topic. Every other forum/board system I've seen has this feature, so why not here? A wise-man once told me never to trust anything a wise-man tells you.

The design reasoning went something like this: Very visible post counts encourage people to make lots of posts to get to a "respectable" number: I know someone who arrived on another website, put up his personal ad, and then made 2000 (very short!) posts in a few weeks, and then slowed down noticeably. Instead IC shows how long people have been a member, which penalises people who recycle their identity every year or so to evade the reputation they've earned. I know this isn't perfect, especially for new people, but it discourages a "crash and burn" approach to dealing with other people. Regards, Admin Remember: it's only a website

If someone, other than the poster, really cares
how many posts they have made they can see an approximate number on their profile. Quantity is no indicator of quality. Having made 5,000 posts doesn't make your posts any more worthy than someone's first post. Your post count is a bit like weblog views count and profile views count, not important to anyone else. Why don't cash machines have a Gamble button?

I must say I really hate post counts, as if it was intended to convey some sort of 'worthiness' on the originator. I agree with the 'numbers don't necessarily equate to quality' and other arguments above. Its easy enough to do, but pointless. 'To Oblivion, and beyond!'

So it's done to prevent spamming, fair enough, and I have to say, I agree. Having been a moderator on another message board I am all too familiar with the ball-ache of spammers. A wise-man once told me never to trust anything a wise-man tells you. |
