Thanks to my recent discovery of a passion for photography, I'm looking to buy a digital SLR camera. However, passion will only get you so far without knowledge, and I'm not sure what the best ones are to get, and which ones to avoid.
Unfortunately, I don't have much money at the moment, so my budget will only stretch to around £300, which I know is not a lot in the world of cameras.
I managed to borrow a friend's Nikon D40 for a while, and although fairly old and basic compared to what you can get, it seemed to do everything I needed it to, and I very much enjoyed using it. I've heard that the D90 is a good model, but at £500-600, it's too expensive for me.
So I'm wondering, should I go for a D40, which I can seem to get at around £250? Or is there a better model from a different make for around the same price that I should go for instead?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I would look at the secondhand market online, maybe Ebay. You should be able to get a decent used Canon or Nikon DSLR for your budget.
I wouldn't recommend any particular make or model though because it will just depend upon what bargains arise at any particular time. 'Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather' - Velvet Underground Edited 16 Mar 10, 9:11 AM by tanken

Yup, have to agree with that. You could get an older, but more functional camera, a D200 or similar off eBay for a reasonable price Any photographer who says he's not a voyeur is either stupid or a liar. - Helmut Newton

ffordes has a D60 (mint) for 250 ish BO and a D100 (E++) for 170 ish BO (i wouldn't personally) be careful with ebay and don't pay way less than the "going price" for Digital camera kit without holding it. the values of DSLR's are well known. eg the going rate for a D200 is 450 E+ - E++ and i would be careful with anything less than 400. don't forget about glass. eBay is where I've mostly been looking, and where I've found D40's for around £250.
From a man who knows what he's talking about (not that I'm saying the others don't!), I've seen you snapping away at various clubs and events. The D40 it is then, now to save up the cash... A wise-man once told me never to trust anything a wise-man tells you.

Two main point for me: You wouldn't go far wrong with a Nikon or a Cannon. I think most people would agree that they make most of the running. Having the larger user base, makes it easier to pick up bits. Also, see what your friends have got, as a loan of a lens / additional flash gun may be of use now and then. Try a few cameras before you spend any money. When I purchased my D70, the main factor was the size. Similar spec Cannons just felt too small in my hand. If your not comfortable with the size, weight, controls, your not going to use it as much. Regards Sp

Tricky question.. Its not the camera that takes the photos, its you. It depends a lot on what sort of photos you want to take, too. I do rugby which means I need a proper telephoto. I also do in-club action stuff which means a short focal length zoom... I would go to a good camera shop and just handle some cameras and see how heavy they are, how easy are the controls, do they feel right for you? I think you would be wise to opt for either Canon or Nikon, because there is more chance you'll get a decent s/h camera, but I'd be very cautious about buying s/h from e-bay as you are unlikely to get any kind of guarantee - and these are crammed full of electronics which must work properly. Ask at a shop you can go back to, which will guarantee the item, and may also have suitable lenses for you to choose and maybe add on at a later date. If you can, see if you can borrow one for a few pics, and look at the results. Whatever you buy, take as many pics as you can, and be really critical of what you've taken. With digital you can afford to take more and ditch more, the cost is only your time and effort, and you'll learn 'on the job'. 'To Oblivion, and beyond!'

Yes, I am aware of the pitfalls and disadvantages of buying second hand, and will take every available precaution in doing so.
As for the type of pics I will be taking, I'm looking primarily at two things, landscapes/nature for day-to-day, and some bondage/BDSM pictures in the evening A wise-man once told me never to trust anything a wise-man tells you.

Looks like you could do with a few flashguns as well for the evening pics but I won't divert this thread 'Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather' - Velvet Underground

Also bear in mind that the camera bodies these days are to a certain extent disposable, in the sense that they become obsolete quite soon, whereas lenses will last through several cameras.
