Tags: Hull (HU)
So anyone who knows me knows that two of my passions are my home town of Hull and poetry. Therefore i thought it long overdue to write a blog about the two. It seems apt to write it here in March, as Stevie Smith (who was born in Hull, but lived most of her life in London) died on the 7th March 1971.
I wrote a poem back in 2003 called 'Not Drowning But Waving' as an homage to her poem 'Not Waving But Drowning'. (See what i did there?) Please feel free to indulge in some emo trite below and then please go and support local poetry by going to a reading, open mic session or buying some local poetry. Keep it off the net!
Not drowning, but waving
I wade through my poetry collection
And CD cases
Longing to drown myself in words
And sad melodies.
But my search is in vain.
No shelter from this in words.
I create my own -
But I cannot drown
As I know how to swim
A little too well
In these unknown waves.
And I have armbands on anyway.

Philip Larkin is my God. Well, apart from the other one that sits in the sky. Honestly, i'd so stalk Larkin if he was still alive. I sometimes lick the Hull Uni Library walls just cos he used to work there. I don't think John 'fucking' Godber wrote any poetry but Andrew Marvell did and he was pretty amazing too. Other poets linked to Hull include: Douglas Dunn, Andrew Motion, Roger McGough and Peter Didsbury. mia, x "Passion should believe itself irresistible. And another one.... Philip Larkin - This Be The Verse They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do. They fill you with the faults they had And add some extra, just for you.

Larkin was such a happy soul- but Toads revisited is still one of my faves - though calling hull folk a 'cut price crowd' was quite harsh |
