I have nothing to add to this except to say that I love a thread like this that is gradually digging up some history of past and great groundbreaking events and groups. It all has a certain atmospere that I find completely intriguing. I was all too late to be a part of the early, and dare I say, more... what's the word?... no, not more, but 'less' commercial events.
That didn't make any sense did it? lp ................bitie bitie...................

Have to say I made my first forays into the public scene at Maitresse, travelling down from the Midlands on more than a few occasions as at the time London was the only place holding any semi public events. It holds many happy if now somewhat hazy memories for me. Dates def are a blur tho faces I do remember. The likes of Master Keith and his ladies and the wonderfull Madam Clare. Also a shaven haired lass acalled Shelly lol.
Great atmosphere and tunes like Billy Idol and the Cult even used to have me dancing. Happy Days.. well early mornings walking back up to Euston. Love to chat to any of the old regs. Proud to say Maitresse was the catalyst for me starting Club Dominion in the Midlands in Oct '88 and all the many great times and people Ive met since. To me Maitresse was a very important part of the early fledgling club scene along with Skin Two and the excellent Der Putsch ( waves to SB) Terry Edited 20 Mar 10, 1:08 AM by Terry

This is all such a shame... I'm getting nostalgic here for something I never even knew existed at the time... and had I been aware I would have been in just the right place for it too.
I would have been working in the vacinity, and very much in the right frame of mind.
blast! lp ................bitie bitie...................

Hard to paint a full picture of how it was back then. Stallions itself definately lent itself to the Fet Club strange and edgy feel. Maybe it was my own nervousness being a scene newbie in a fairly new social scene. Down the stairs off Falconburg Court, the small reception area before going through the double doors. To the left was the main bar and some seating plus a small dance floor which had another small bar at the end. Low ceilinged that went round to another seating area and a corridor that ran parallel to the main room. All darkly lit. No play kit in those days, it was the floor, chair or table. No fancy play toys either. If you conjure up a picture from Soft Cells "Sex Dwarf" that is my abiding memory of the atmosphere of the venue. It wasnt a large club, quite the opposite but I dont think the atmosphere has ever been replicated. Terry

Could it have been Christy? I remember her, but can't think of any others with shaved heads. I suppose there were. I remember Clare in her Nurse's uniform - formidable! I saw her a while back, at LFF I think. International man of mystery

Yes I do remember Madam Clare and her main subbie Brian. Her bold brash voice, and she cut a very striking figure but underneath a truly lovely lady. Also one chap called Eddie has just come to mind who had some late night house parties I could never get to. Seem to remember (though I may be wrong) Jack took on the night and he and a collegue shared DJ duty. Would love to fill in a few more of the blanks Terry |
