Ong Bak and Kung Fu Hustle. The Good, the Bad and the Weird. Not much martial arts but a great, stylish and fun Korean movie. "Did you hear a thump....?"

"Le Pact de Loups" (English version: "The Brotherhood of the Wolf") has some stylish martial arts, wirework and weapons displays. It also has Monica Belluci cutting her customer in a whorehouse, "Something to to remember me by, Chevalier," and taking someone's throat out with a fan. A cracking good yarn as well. ETA: Greatest pure martial arts film of all time? "Fist of Fury", Bruce Lee (IMNSHO). It captures China's lowest historical point, 'The Sick Man of Asia' period, enslaved to foreign exploitation and encapsulates the spirit of the Boxer Rebellion. Wonderful operatic fight scenes enhanced by authentic skills. The unsophisticated film style accentuates the genuine enthusiasm of the actors. Fist of Legend by Jet Lee is also worth a look. A blatant rip-off of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, but good none the less.

Just checked this film out (as recommendations go you had me at Monica Belluci) and it's awesome. Worth checking out just for the hotness. But to truly savour said hotness make sure you get the subtitled version, natch. Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: Why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: Why not marry safe science if you love it so much.

Ok, so...
I have to throw Ip Man (starring Donnie "Sky" Yen) into the mix here. It's only recently been released on DVD but the fights were overseen by Ip Chun (the real-life son of the film's eponimous hero!). It's beautifully made. Yes, at times it's a little far-fetched but watch the scene where he kicks the living sh*t out of ten blackbelts and tell me it doesn't make you want to get your pyjamas on and go kick some ass! Both Hero and House of Flying Daggers have already been mentioned several times but can't be recommended enough. Oh and Zatoichi is great fun (apart from the entirely unnescessary song and dance ending - just turn it off before then!) Wrath Do a little dance. Make a little love. Get down tonight! Get down tonight!!! (And suck it like your fucking life depended on it. Which it might!)

I thought about this before my first post. Fist of Fury is excellent but I think The Way of the Dragon has the edge if just for the fantastic final sequence with Chuck Norris. My choice was between these two though every time. M Space travels in my blood. And there ain't nothing I can do about it.

Apart from Chocolate, which is utterly brilliant on all levels, I really enjoyed Fearless. I think it might be part of the same cycle as Crouching tiger, Hero and Flying Daggers, but those are more about visual beauty and choreography. Fearless is light on the fancy wirework and the flying through trees stuff but big on the bushido and heroism. And the violence, which is always a good thing. It's only a weblog
