Beautiful cinematography, and if you can understand the language, or read the subtitles quickly enough for it not to interrupt your viewing *pleasure* nice script/story too.

The choreographed sword (bamboo) scenes are great, as is the echo game at the beginning..and loads of other stuff ^_^

However it's the underlying message, about the zen spirit in martial arts, which i think really elevates it.

It was written by Bruce Lee, who planned to star in it alongside James Coburn (one of his pupils), & the screenplay was by Stirling Siliphant (another of his pupils). But it was David Carradine who bought the rights & starred in it after Lee's un-timely death. I think the major grivance everyone has with it is, it's not how Lee really envisaged it or would have made it; but i love it nonetheless.

ps. It never had a DVD release so may be hard to track down. And if the plot seems vaguely familiar, it's because Kung Fu Panda shamelessly stole it.

More old school it's films like 'Snake in the Eagle's shadow' a true classic from Jackie Chan before he sold out to Hollywood.

Then there are more obscure ones like 'The Black Dragon revenges the death of Bruce Lee', which happens to have a very cruel woman with a snake that uses it to kill people and laugh at them as they choke to death on the poison.. strangely erotic and kinky.. but I digress.

Yes, I fully agree. Speaking of shorter "films" where martial arts are used, my absolute favorite is the following clip showing how to properly apply rear choke. I've been asked repeatedly by fellow BDSMers how to do it, and this clip is the perfect answer. Safety notice (for IC safety police) - there's a warning at the beginning of the clip "do not try this at home, this technique is being demonstrated by professionals". On the other hand I used rear choke well before youtube was created and IMHO this hold is the only martial arts technique which can be used in SM (with great effect, I am a control freak and what!s more intensive than your sub turning into a putty in your hands in a few seconds? )

Hero is class. Bit too pretty to be a proper kick arse type film, but it's also a history lesson, so I can forgive it.

You can get Ong-Bak with subtitles - it's in the DVD options, subtitles or over-dub. (HATE overdubbed martial arts films, go have to have the original dialogue). Trouble is, their sing-song Thai accents do sound weird against the diet of gruff Japanese we were brought up on.
