If you're into swordplay, forget the OTT Kill Bill. Search out The Yakuza (1970's with Robert Mitchum).

Of course if you have 3 1/2hours to kill, there's always Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.

The Yakuza and Seven Samurai are classics. The best recent martial arts film I've seen is Chocolate:

I have to agree, im not a wire play fan, all that floating on air bollox, just crack him one.

Asuming we are not botherd about a plot or such nonsens

Drunken Master 2

to be honest pretty much anything Jakie Chan pre 2000

Though the forbiden kingdom has 1 half decent scene in it and to watch jet lee and the chan in one film is enough reason to watch it

Ong Bak.

the second one is alright as well but not as good as 1.

Twin Warriors

Infact it's worth doing an imdb for jet lee and just go wild.

Steve Wang's Drive (not many people know about this film but it is funny and fantastic) it's a bit like rush hour but made before and a bit more gritty

Not so much a martial arts film but the same kind of kick you get from one comes with District 13.

There are lots of good stuff out there but i can't remember the names of half the ones i've seen.

Oh and if i remember correctly, my drunken master was the best of that night...

I beleive in Karma, it basicaly means i can be as cruel to people as i like and just asume they deserve it :)

Oh and check out death trance, some wicked capoeira in there as well (my martial art, which is rarely seen in film at least in a good way, yey)

I watched The Yakuza only a few weeks ago and I agree a very good film, but I expect nothing less from the writers of Taxi Driver and Chinatown and directed by Sydney Pollack. I enjoyed very much. I watched originally as it was a Robert Mitchum movie. He is in Farewell my Lovely territory here as a world weary retired detective. It also features an early performance by a oft forgetten actor Richard Jordan.

With regards to great martial arts I also like The Way of the Dragon. It may be a cliche but I am still a Bruce Lee fan and this film features one of the best choreographed fight sequences of all time.

Best

Space travels in my blood. And there ain't nothing I can do about it.
I know I'm being used, that's okay cause I like the abuse.
I can resist everything except temptation.
It's always funny until someone gets hurt and then it's just hilarious.

Kill Bill is wank! It was a martial arts film written by a fan who knows how to direct and thinks that with enough effort he can also become a choreographer. And even with 3.5 years of writing, it still failed.

Crouching Monkey Hidden Donkey is very elegant and stylish but is more about myth and legend and martial arts as a representation of beauty than a martial arts film per se.

Seven Samurai is spell binding as a film. But there's very limited martial arts in it. It's very much about the differences in the character, morals, honour, ethics and ideals of the disparate band of men who all fight shoulder to shoulder for the same aim, for different reasons.

My favourite I can think of offhand is an obscure film called The Barefoot Kid.

Oh, and I LOVE Enter The Dragon. It's cheesy and seventies but it just *works*.
