One day I was standing on an empty platform at Knightsbridge Tube Station. A man came down the steps and stood a couple of feet to my left. I looked at him out of the corner of my eye. My breathing stopped. The train arrived and we got in to the same empty carriage. I sat down. He stood near the door. I studied his beautiful profile, taking care to ensure that when he looked round at me my eyes were averted from him.
As the train pulled into my station I apprehensively wondered how I was going to walk so close to him without collapsing. I pulled myself up from my seat. My knees gave way and I fell back down. I tried again and this time succeeded in getting upright. My exit was a very good impression of Bambi learning to walk.
I hadn't realised up to that moment what 'weak at the knees' really meant and wondered how many other women Terence Stamp had seen trying to walk with no control over their legs.

A fair few I would imagine. Iconic 60's face. Stamp had affairs with some of the most widely admired women of his day, including Julie Christie, Jean Shrimpton, and Brigitte Bardot. The reference in the Kink's Waterloo Sunset to "Terry and Julie" is supposed to be about him and Christie. A gentleman is a man who can play the accordion but doesn't. |
