Hi, This was going to be a press release, but I'm now just putting out a request for information. Last month, IC set up a "Page" on Facebook. Pages function rather like profiles, but are intended for organisations, websites, businesses etc. The page had links to recent threads on IC, to IC itself, and a small image of the main page as it's profile picture. This gave members of IC on Facebook another short hand way of mentioning their interest in BDSM on their profiles, by becoming a "fan" (the Page equivalent of a "friend" on Facebook.) Several BDSM/Fetish clubs in the UK are using Pages in the same way, uploading photos even and listing future dates using Facebook's events features. Ten days ago, IC's "Page" was deleted with a vague warning about unacceptable content. This isn't the first time Facebook has acted in what appears to be a discriminatory way on the grounds of sexuality (ie vanilla teenages posting about blowjobs is ok, but posting mentions of LGBT or kink material is a lottery.) Last year's notable example was an ad for an independent film with a (poly) lesbian storyline: http://www.afterellen.com/blog/jensabella/facebo... The ensuing backlash was helped by the poster of the ad being a lecturer at the journalism graduate school in Berkeley, and Facebook undeleted it. IC tried appealing our own deletion, but this was ignored. We then contacted Facebook's press office, and outlined what had happened to IC, our awareness of the "Then Came Lola" incident and also the way the profile of (Dr) Gloria Brame (who co-authored Different Loving and frequently presents at kink events) was also deleted, without explanation. After a brief exchange of emails, fleshing all this out, the Page has been instated: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Informed-Consent/2... Has anyone else had stuff on Facebook suddenly disappear? (Clearly, they can remove content that breaks their AUP or which a reasonable person would consider to be out of order eg harassing other users. I mean material who's only crime appears to be its kink nature.) For tactical reasons, it would be better for replies to be by memo. Thanks, Admin Remember: it's only a website |
