Hey, here is a question to those far more knowege able on the subject than me... I read in the paper today about new rules covering vegans, amongst other groups, against discrimination. There was however some exceptions, namily jediism. So my thing is can we get protection under these laws for the BDSM scene? Gobby Whore, fighting the man

It's an interesting idea but I suspect for this to be the case, BDSM would need to be considered an ideology, faith or belief system. I don't think that applies - particularly given that BDSM covers such a range of practices and interests. But it's also worth noting that discrimination protection exists for those within the scene with "protected characteristics" including, for instance, the LGBT community. This is not just any scene, This is an S&M scene xx Edited 7 Mar 10, 10:32 PM by passion8

That's not a man, that's a fish. Meanwhile it seems unlikely. To have any sort of hope of being recognised as an entity a group needs to have some sort of orthodoxy and BDSM doesn't. If we did exactly the same thing but called ourselves an offshoot of some religion or other though we ought to be fine. Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: Why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: Why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired.

Do you have linkage to the article? I don't really get how one's kink manifests itself in the workplace or in shops etc anyway. The fact someone needs to tell people they work with about their sexual activities and proclivities is, in my opinion, a good enough reason to discriminate against them anyway - on the basis that they're indiscreet and gobby about their sex life. I'd be keen to hear of any real life examples of people who've been discriminated against solely because of their kink. If it's the wearing of an obtrusive collar, a barcode on exposed flesh, or wearing leather waistcoats, I'd put these down more to violations of the dress code than discrimination against the kinky.

I suspect that the reason vegans want equality is to force workplace canteens to provide vegan menu choices. Of course, this has nothing to do with equality and is more about preferential treatment. I want rare fillet steak on the menu every day in my free canteen, but I'm not going to get it. ***Signature area for sale. Imagine your product, event or ideas being publicised here. These principles are a direct result of the judgement in an employment case in November that is referred to in the Telegraph article. I started a thread about it back then. I don't think BDSM per se could be protected under this code, but a set of principles such as the CAAN statement could possibly be covered by the definition.
