It is just the values of capitalist society as a whole that are reflected here. The ruling ideas are the ideas of the ruling class etc. etc. IC is no different to any other forum in that respect where the wealthy think they can lord it over the rest.

Also, of course, the anonimity of the internet. I very much hope that no-one with any class or courtesy would march up to someone in the street and start lecturing them about their figure/IQ/weight/salary/BMI etc. However, in the anonymous world of the internet, one has the ability to gatecrash others' discussions and be as unpleasant as possible, with no consideration at all, apparently, for others' feelings or opinions. My experience in life has shown me, again and again, that the people who shout loudest about their self-perceived marvellousness are those with the shakiest senses of self-esteem. Those of us with a little more class and intelligence tend to feel sad for them. Ah semen. What is it about that ridiculous white secretion that pulls down the corners of an Englishman's mouth? |
