At work the other day our computer network went down. It's kind of integral to the job, so after some time on the phone to tech support our boss said we could go home.
"If I stay," I piped up, "will I still get paid?"
"Er, sure. If you want," my boss replied.
Everyone looked at my like I'd gone insane. "Why would you stay?" they asked. I genuinely don't get where they're coming from here.
You make a decision to come to work because sitting working for an hour and getting paid is worth more to you than the next best thing you could be doing with that hour; going to the pub, watching TV, smoking crack, whatever it is you do with your time.
The fact that we can't do the work doesn't change anything, except that it means we can sit and read/chat/tug each other off for the rest of the day instead of doing actual work. If anything I'm even more keen to be at work, not less.

I once temped for a company that changed its entire IT system. So overtime was offered to play catch up and also have additional training. So dilligently I sat there one Saturday AM, for 7 hours as promissed. Then after 1 hour to my, and the external IT consultants, utter disbelief the manager offered triple time to anyone who came in on the Sunday. The entire permanent staff promptly walked out and did not re-emerge until the next day. Only the Consultant and I remained for my promised 7 hours. Still I returned on the Sunday and reaped the extra money too. Its all ethics. From this time forward, you will service us

Not for me, I just like money. Or at least, the stuff you can buy with it. What men in all the world have shown such daring?

I was on my box! Only place I ever temped and took home so much money. The agency loved it too as they in turn made a fortune. They used to ring my line manager just to confirm the rates. Money is the root of all evil, but oh how much fun can we have with the route of all evil. From this time forward, you will service us

I can honestly say that I wish I had less to do if the network goes down. We are always so short staffed and overworked, it's the only bloody time I get to catch up with all the other things that are in my 'will eventually get round to' pile that, by the time i do get round to it, has become an 'Urgent' pile lol! Never had enough money to go home without being paid though but then again, I do work for the NHS. |
