I've had a request to pass this on. (I don't know anything more about the production company or the team involved than it says here.)

My name is Tom Costello. I work in development at the independent television production company CTVC. We are currently working with BBC3 to develop a show about the practice of erotic asphyxiation.

I understand that when this issue does surface in the mainstream media, the context is normally always tragic and the resulting reaction invariably negative. I understand also that this practice is controversial even within the BDSM community and that you take safety very seriously.

I should clarify that this is not a doc specifically about the BDSM scene but I would very much like to talk to some people within the community, especially people who are into breath play, to get their perspectives on the practice - what sort of forms it can take, whether it is always dangerous, how it can be practised safely etc.

If you are available to chat please email me at tom@ctvc.co.uk or give me a ring on 02073783224. We're based in London so if you're local I'd be happy to meet for a chat too.

Remember: it's only a website :)

I'd be interested in talking to them if it wouldn't inevitably degenerate into a discussion about Jane Longhurst et al.

I guess someone should at least point out the difference between solo auto erotic asphyxiation and breath play. The former is what gets most of the press, the latter only makes it in extreme (pornography :)) cases.

I don't know what's right and what's real any more

When the issue surfaces in the mainstream media (in its invariably tragic context), it always seems to refer specifically to a case of auto-erotic asphyxiation, which is inherently risky, not so much because of the asphyxiation itself, but because of the auto part.

Simply having another person present, who is able to stop the asphyxiation process beyond the point of incapacitation, should be enough to mitigate against most of the inherent risks, thus avoiding tragedy.

So, maybe some of these tragedies could have been avoided if the victims had had access to more safety information, not to mention the means of meeting like-minded people to play with, without feeling that they ran the risk of being seen as 'perverts' (in the negative sense)?

I should clarify that this is not a doc specifically about the BDSM scene...

What is it specifically about, just out of interest?

I haven't really got anything to say about the subject of the documentary, but I just wanted to say that Tom has approached us in a very sensible manner.

He has provided his real name, the production company , the channel that has commissioned it and then given a brief description of the programme. If anybody were thinking of getting involved, there is enough information to make some sort of basic checks on his background and previous work.

However I too am puzzled that a programme about erotic asphyxiation is not regarded as being about BDSM. It seems pretty kinky to me and many would consider it to be fairly extreme.
