Did this exercise a year or two back: Diesels are more expensive that the equivalent petrol. I came to the conclusion that for the Passat I bought, buying a diesel was a no brainer. The same car as a diesel was £1500 more; same age, mileage, condition. £1500 buys an awful lot of petrol. I worked out that even if I kept the car 5 years and did 20k miles a year I still would not be ahead financially. Buy a petrol car, enjoy the extra power. Zen S&M: The sound of one hand smacking.

I have a lovely little diesel Fiesta that I regularly get 66-68 mpg out of (I once managed 92mpg, but that was a rather particular situation)! I know you said you wanted a slightly larger one, the Focus is a nice vehicle. I know it's a little boring, but you get a lot of car for your money, and they're cheap to repair as well! Two roads diverged in a wood and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. (R. Frost)

*noted. Then youll have to decide where the compromise lies. A "large saloon" is only ever going to be relatively economical, and as Proccie pointed out the overall financial benefits are dubious...
Something like a Lexus or a Honda Legend, and factor in a gas conversion? Buy it cheap because its considered thirsty, spend the difference on halving your fuel costs (approx), and swan around in big car luxury at approx 40mpg prices (Watch out for noisy valve lifters on the Legend tho, if its not been treated to "best" oil.) I think too much, therefore I am a bit of a twat.
