I'm not.

I haven't read all the replies and thoughts on the thread.

But it seems to me to be a bit like...a school playground.

People are "tribal". They like to think they're part of "popular" factions or "gangs". I can remember things from my childhood along the following lines:

"You can't come Rachel, because *you're* not friends with x, y, or z". That sneering and hurtful spite thing going on. And yes it did hurt.

I also remember, "Rachel, would *you* like to be involved. We really like you. You're one of *us*. Whereas all these other people aren't." And yes, that makes one feel "special".

I believe it's called life. And the response you have to it all is much a function i think of your own security and "care factor".

In terms of the OP: like much of what goes on on IC, I don't much mind how and what people use it for. Each to their own. If you want to advertise your private party, and vet accordingly, you go for it.

We are all free to care, or not. To mind, or not. To want to go to these "exclusive" events, or not. And to care about what others think of us, and whether that means we belong to that "crowd", or not.

I'd say in the case of Dystopia (rather than Kinky Salon), it is more like:

"You can't come to the hardcore mountain climb followed by white water rafting down again Tim, because *you're* not into either mountain climbing or white water rafting."

"Yes, but I *want* to come."

"But you don't do either of those sports and they're actually kinda dangerous."

"I don't care, I don't want to be left out of things, even if I will complain when I am there..."

I don't think that's an accurate comparison at all, Tim. What is actually being said is, "I have no idea whether you're into white water rafting or mountain climbing, or how proficient you are at them but, even if you are, you can't come to this event because I don't know you personally."

My query is that if an event is only open to people personally known to the organisers, then *who* are you *advertising* it to on the Events board?

I am just curious what function the advertising is serving, if the guest list is already drawn up?

I think that by your posting on the boards and expressions of opinion on topics, you can make clear what your interests are, even if you're not personally known by people.

I fail to see any great difference between Sweet Torments and Dystopia - other than one is already established and one is about to begin establishing itself. If you say something is "invite only, for now", isn't that essentially how all private members clubs would begin their membership cycle - you know the organisers, or you know someone who does who can vouch for you.

Firstly, let me be clear - I am not referring to any particular event. I am responding to a general question posed by the OP.

Secondly, you can be kinky as hell, but not be a regular poster on IC, or be a regular poster who doesn't routinely discuss one's kink life in detail on the boards.

Either way, that seems irrelevant if we're discussing an "invitation only" event?

You seem to be referring only to Dystopia, which I understand will become open to new members in due course.

I am *not* referring to Dystopia - I am responding to to the OP, which specifically referred to "invitation only" events.

Again, what purpose is being served by advertising an event which is "invitation only" on the Events board?

Bugger, I swore I wasn't going to post. BUT it's invitation, not invite. Invite is the verb! Will no-one think of CA???

Perhaps I'm just being a bit thick (for a change!), but if the organisers of an event already know the people whom they'll be inviting, because they know them personally etc, then to whom are they advertising the event on the Events board?

Again, what purpose is being served by advertising an event which is "invitation only" on the Events board?

Ah, ok. I thought I'd addressed that by implication.

My assumption is that if there is an invite only (fuck you pedants!) event, which is TRULY invite ONLY, then people with any sense will just send out invites and keep it hush hush. Because those left out get all humpty.

So if an event is invite only (yeah, suffer it!) and on the boards, I assume it actually means direct invitation AND invitation by association.

Which was why I referred to Dystopia so as to give a concrete example to debate upon. Otherwise we could have been in danger of just arguing about the possible maybes of someone's theoretical event.

I agree that a truly invite only event being on the boards is both an incoreect use of the boards and a sure-fire way to fuck off everyone you know who wasn't on the guest list and therefore either a brave move, or possibly a bit stupid, depending on individual circumstances.
