To the ladies - Mirena coils ... (94)

This post is on the Other BDSM web board.

Thanks for sharing, everybody - this thread has been incredibly informative.

My own update is that I just had my Mirena fitted today, under general anesthesia. Fortunately, everything went fine, no bleeding to speak of, and the cramping isn't bad (period-level cramps). Oh, and there was fentanyl for the pain immediately post-op - jeezy wheezy, that's amazing stuff! :-D

I'll certainly be watching out for the complications that have been mentioned and explained so well by various people, and will of course keep my fingers crossed that I don't get them.

Thanks again - it's so refreshing that we can write about these issues so frankly, especially taking our various kinks into consideration. :)

(and no, I'm not still euphoric from the drugs ...)

My GP surgery seems keen on getting everyone off the pill - cost cutting, no doubt. My doctor keeps suggesting i change to the coil or implant. On a a subsequent visit, I had a look at the computer screen and saw she had written 'doesn't 'fancy' trying an alternative'. Not surprising after she showed me the coil and the tube they shove it up you with - eeuuggh!

I have had one for about 2 years now and haven't had any problems with it at all.

I had mine for just over three years. No anesthesia need when it is put in. it is simply a short pain when it is done on the first day of period. My period pain before that was monstrous in comparison.

The last year I had occasional cramps, quite strong and missed my period alltogether several times. Had I been in a relationship I would have probabbly gone for a new one, but the question didnīt arise. And it is not cheap over here. 250 Euros I think.

Apart from the cramps in the end, the only bad thing I felt was a feeling of being blocked up when My period didnīt come. It was kind of nervewrecking not to have a regular cycle.

I find it curious when someone on here reports to have gotten it under general anesthesia. Is that normal? I have never heard that from any of the women I know who had a coil set.

added: @Heavensent, the piece of "wire" that hangs out is only very soft and short and my Ex was also very blessed. He never felt a thing. You can feel it on the tip of your finger when you reach really far and it feels like a thread for a pearlnecklace or fishingwire. In regards of the anesthesia: My gynocologist has always firmly said that unless you have had children a coil is not for you. It is too forceful and can harm the cervix. Another option is the implant capsule. (No idea what it is called in UK) That lasts a full year and gets put under the skin of your arm.

My GP and my daughter's GP at Uni both said that it is more difficult if you haven't had children as the cervix is firmer. They also said that an experienced doctor should be able to fit one with minimal discomfort. My 21 year old daughter had hers fitted by the local family planning clinic doctor who fits hunderds every year! She was contra-indicted for the implant, the pill had made her ill and so this was the best option. We have a history of womb cancer in our family and the Mirena can give some protection against that.

The implanon lasts 3 years.

Thanks, I am feeling better about the stringy bits!

At the end of the day, some professional opinions will differ. My male GP is more than happy to put one in at the surgery, no anaesthetic, whereas the lady GP (at the same practice) says it would be "unkind" to do so.

My (private, although he also does NHS work) gynaecologist has told me that he will not put one into someone who hasn't had children without a GA. And this guy has cut (not lasered) pre-cancerous cells from my cervix under a local (at my request), whereas he normally does this under a general. He wouldn't do a D&C under a local, he insisted on a general, although I know someone who had a D&C under local with a different doctor. Horses for courses I suppose. But I'm happy with the guy, so if he says GA then I trust his judgement.

The implant is not an option that I'm willing to consider. I have been told by three medical practitioners that the implant is not suitable for me, therefore I trust their judgement on this.

I hope you're still getting on fine with it - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you x

I have one of these little b**** fitted and I hate it, I want it out, out, out! Every time I have sex or play vaginally I end up bleeding and spotting for days! I seem forever to be in that state! The wire that protrudes is the problem, it is sharp it is too strong and inflexible and obviously it is the cause of the problem, every time contact is made with it - bam you bleed!

The mirena is a damned and blasted nuisance! For me at any rate!

It is going as soon as I can get it out!

To differentiate between the two types in usage in the UK...

Mirena Coil is more commonly known as IUS and is a hormone based coil.

IUD is a copper based coil.

(I work in healthcare and have been buying a lot of these of late. And it makes a change from purchasing condoms. IUS are more expensive to buy than IUD; a little bit of dull trivia for you all.)
