Can someone please help me with a bit of internet grammar and literacy. I've clearly been away for too long, because suddenly I'm seeing a lot of people use this, when I believe it was not in use one year ago: What's the exact convention here? Is the use of '@Name' just to refer to people's profiles? Or can it be used to refer to previous posts by that person? Is it ever used for links that don't involve profiles? Is it specific just to IC or is this an online literacy that's popping into use in facebook and MSN etc as well? When did it come about? I just want to make sure I understand what's going on here before using it myself!

Its migrated over from twitter land, just a quick way to point to a profile page It is not a case of finding the lifestyle or the lifestyle finding you, but realising the lifestyle is within you and letting it out!

If you type "@someone's_name" and type their profile name exactly, then it provides a link to their profile. Eg @gal_rosa links you to mine - but you have to type it exactly right. "The unexamined life is not worth living" - Socrates

It's an IC feature (though other websites may have implemented something similar, but I wouldn't know) and it's just for screen names so far. @TheKey x Check out @The_Art_Forum

Actually it was four, but in the time it took me to check out a reference three others appeared! I think its fairly new to IC, if you look for the details of 'IC code' at the top of this page under 'website help' ..and it takes you to the person's profile, so indirectly it could take you to their posts (.profile . postings) 'To Oblivion, and beyond!'

Does anyone know how it handles name changes? If I do @TheVoid and then changed my name to Voidy would it still link?
All hails Twitter based features though

Let's try it (I grabbed one of your previous names)..
ETA: Yep, it works "Bottom line: it's couples who are truly right for each other wade through the same crap as everybody else, but the big difference is they don't let it take them down. One of those two people will stand up and fight for that relationship every time."

I would assume it's 'transparent to the user' going on previous changes I've noticed, everything stays linked under the new name. Once you've set up the cross refs, adding a new key is not that complex. 'To Oblivion, and beyond!'

OK I should have thought of that... in my defense I've been up since stupid o'clock, makes perfect sense since IC names are permenent and not lost! Cheers! |
