Collaring Cake (13)

OMG Has anyone tried to do a collar in icing for a cake? i can bake a little but icing is not my Forte buy a long shot but i will try...

I agreed to do a cake for a wonderful Mistress and her sub, as I am their maid of honor.

Silly me, talking without thinking that they may change things. I was shown the collar and said "yea, i can do that on top of the cake" as it was so simple, until they changed their minds on the collar and it was way way different and so more complicated. Here I was after giving my word to doing the collar thinking... O fuck!!!

But I tried, tried and tried to do it in icing over several days but it kept breaking as I was linking links together. Then after talking with others it was suggested to do it in metal... easy I thought!! I only have to solder the bits together and hey presto it be done.

Off I went to shop after shop looking for a metal I could use but with no joy as I could not find tinned copper wire in any of them.

I thought emmm the wire I use to solder could be used. I rapped the wire around a wooden spoon handle and got my 110 rings all cut to size, smiling and thinking OMG this is going to look awesome. Hell, I have so many burns on the tips of my fingers as I was trying to do a one about a 1/4 of the original size. Hours and hours spent and rings just melting away, it was soft and after many many hours again. My frustration grew and I was told to leave it alone and stop doing it, but guess what? did i listen? Nope!! I am so stubborn I had to carry on trying. "Its not going to defeat me its only a bloody collar" as my frustrations and swearing started to raise.

To cut the story short, after hours of frustration and burns to not only my fingers but the unit in the kitchen I picked the lot up, fruit cake, rings, icing, cake, and gas mask the bloody lot all went... in the bin. yep it felt good as i flung it in the bin but not as great as I was at the supermarket at 08.00hrs this morning buying the Ingredients all over again. Thankfully i still had fruit left over soaking in the port and rum and it was in the oven by 10.00hrs now while looking after my nieces son the choc one in her oven and NO there will be no collar like the Mistress is giving her sub its going to be a plain simple collar and be done.

Next time anyone asks for a cake or I open my mouth and say I'll do it... if it ant simple its isn't going to be done. What silly things have you done and regretted it at a later date?

excuse the american accent

just tin up the wire cut to length and solder it together make sur e the tip of the iron is well tinned a common mistake or the heat does not transfer properly if u have any old wire knocking about (household electrical wire is probably best if u want it about the same thickness of the solder) just strip the plastic off and away you go

I found the weblog really sweet and moving. I love that you made so much effort for them, and I completely sympathise with the repeated attempts, the frustration, and the fact that they had to get you to promise to stop! I regret to say I can think of no obvious examples of where I've done the same. If at first I don't succeed, I .... wander off and talk to the dog about it. ETA by the way the dog suggests you could have done something else with the cake :-p

I remember from years gone by a friend making a cke with a collar on it. She did a roll of grey icing, squished it abit and added a padlock and key shape. Shit discription but hope it helps.
