Exactly. That's why we're trying to use a FB site, so we can vet them individually.

I'm assuming you mean FB===Facebook? Why? If you are intending on "vetting" people then most peoples' kink network are going to be on here, and not Facebook. It would also open up a bit of a pandoras box of privacy issues.

-discrimination? Um. I could say that events that require latex outfits is classist, or queer play parties are homosexist, or that the many swing parties that only allow people in a certain age group are discriminating. Targeting a demographic isn't discrimination- and, frankly, I'd argue the fact we don't make anyone pay more for the event (like many parties that either don't allow or make single men pay more) would show we're trying to do AWAY with that.

You couldn't make single men pay more for a public event anyway... well that's not exactly true: you could but it would be actionable in court. The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 as amended does cover things like the provision of goods/services, and right at the beginning of the Act (Pt I s2) says that any provision applying to women also applies to men.

Personally, I think the idea of putting an upper age limit as part of any criteria was distasteful. You could have acheived your aim of having a lighthearted, playful event by just advertising it as such - I don't understand why age has got anything to do with it at all? However, as the old adage goes: no publicity is bad publicity, so in that respect you've been rather successful.

Actually, that's been one of the things I've hated about parties here. Some munches, as well. I've found that you go to them with your friends, talk to your friends, and leave with your friends. When I came into this scene here two years ago I felt completely isolated, because it was next to impossible to start conversations with anyone new except for online. Thankfully, the under 35 munch wasn't like that, so I made friends there. ::shrug:: YMMV.

Perhaps the problem isn't with the events you're going to?

Anyway, good luck with your event.

The bit that completely threw me...

Purrverse says "To clarify further- the references thing applies for EVERYONE. It'll be run as a private party, therefore, we want to create a sense of intimacy by having it be mostly friends and friends of friends."

By the end of the same page you say "Actually, that's been one of the things I've hated about parties here. Some munches, as well. I've found that you go to them with your friends, talk to your friends, and leave with your friends."

A little conflict going on there!

...quite!

I'm sure it was for my own good, I'm sure I would have felt awfully out of place, and I'm glad you saved me the embarrassment.

Good luck to the young uns though!

The OP won't get your sarcasm, she didn't get mine earlier... ;-)

From my understanding of the legality of public vs private- a public event anyone can go to, there's no list, money is taken at the door, etc, while a private event is controlled.

I know it might be shocking, but somehow I've managed to make friends. Says something that most of them aren't active on IC though...

ETA: You forget, I'm an American, I don't understand "subtle humour" like sarcasm! It hurts my poor brain.

And you, despite purrverse's many replies and taking other people's opinions and suggestions on her stride, didn't get that she is very happy to listen to all criticism and to make amends. Save your sarcasm for those who really need it.

ha ha. So true. Except it shows your age ;)

Yoof - It's enough to put a person off age play. Anyone for incontinence play?

Not wishing to piss on your parade but it ceased being that private when you posted it on the board.

You can only barely get away with any form of discrimination with a private members club and to run an event as such members must apply and be granted membership 48 hours before the event.

I think even with that format you have to have membership open to all and the BNP recently found out.

It's definitely something I'll look into- one of my core volunteers throws private events and hasn't had an issue with this in the past... might be a matter-of-time thing. ::shrug::

I do however know there are other parties that are considered "private" and yet advertise on boards and such for people interested- I'm curious how they manage it..?

Wow. That all got remarkably snarky remarkably fast.

We might come to this. In a total non-political way, so please don't take this post as me being snidely judgemental, anyone. It just sounds fun.

Seriously, when you have to put a freaking disclaimer on a rsvp in order not to get shrieked at for being discriminatory? IC is mighty touchy this week :-$

Hey. Don't make fun- first you come to a party like this, then you're pushing grandmas in front of buses!

Oh. Sorry. I should say grandpas as well, to not be sexist. :P
