I was browsing this thread and I don't want to repeat any of the comments made there, but it got me thinking.

It is called "sub space" rather than "masochist space". Why do so many of the comments relate to experiences felt during play rather than during any other submissive act?

The comments refering to achieving a mental state where one cannot feel pain, or feel disconnected from pain got me thinking in particular.

Has anyone ever experienced sub space (or any other altered mental state) during submission without pain?

I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on this, particularly as I have recently had some strange experiences in this area and would be happy to chat about those if anybody wants to memo me.

Thanks!

I have often put my s into subspace with little more than an instruction to hold a pose....now that may be her ability rather than my skill as a Dom ;-) but if pain is the only way for someone to get into ss, then you have to ask the question - are they entering ss to run a away from pain or are they entering it because they deeply want to..... I prefer the deeply want to personally

Without a doubt. And in the right conditions the feeling can last for hours. Any kind of rope harness being tied onto my body will send me to a warm floaty space where I find it hard to concentrate. My clothes put on over the harness and then being taken out will keep me in that space for hours.

On one memorable occasion it was a chain padlocked around my waist I floated not just while out wearing the chain but for a substantial amount of time after the chain had been removed.

Knives moving over my skin, or the anticipation of needle play send me to another place, still absent, still floaty, still unfocussed, but in some ways sharper as it is fuelled by fear.

Following instructions especially ones that I would really rather not follow can send me to a quiet place, a warm, safe secure, floaty quiet place.

Sub space through pain I find very different, I guess more vibrant.

If you don't like what you see, what you read, then just move along. Life is too short to waste it arguing about the little things.

Sub space without pain, yes I have experienced that through rope, being tied and the interaction that involved. I'm sure that there are other ways that I could be lulled into that place, eye contact is a massive thing to getting me there.

I would also like to add something.

Although I understand (having been 'drunk' on endorphins yesterday) that there is a difference between purly S&M mental states and submissive states I think the big black line of 'masochists don't subspace' relies on the assumption that D/s and S&M are seperate in a masochists head.

There are some who simply play and want S&M, I do sometimes and that is great, the headspace will be endorphin based not 'subby'.

My personal masochism is the route that I take to express submission. There is a real and true power play between the Sadist/Top/Dominant and the masichist/bottom/submissive (whatever terms used)which although often limited to the 'scene' is no less powerful than a D/s dynamic.

It is within and through S&M play that I experience this power exchange, it is that power exchange that helps to bring out my submission and thus I subspace from acts of masochism.

Horses for courses and all of that. I think some assumptions just slip in, one of which being that submission has to be something outside of or independant from S&M play, true in many cases, but there are exceptions.

Yes, in fact i don't think i've ever experienced sub space with pain! For me being completely immobilised and put in sensory deprivation gets me there!

I had no idea until last year what sub space really was when I saw someone else go into it.

Sadly as much as I enjoy the play it seems it not something everyone can enter into but then for someone wanting to be a pro sub this could be a good thing as the person I watched was out of it for quite some time.

I was asked while tied helplessly to a pole and gagged a few days ago by someone if I was nearly at sub space. I couldn't answer at the time and was really enjoying myself but as for sub space

Sadly no I wasn't maybe I just haven't been beat hard enough.

I guess I came close once while tied up having my bum hit by just about everything and it was even bleeding but I was in a stage where all I could feel was pleasure not the pain that I clearly should have been feeling. It wasn't sub space as I now know.

It also makes me wonder if some others don't really get there but maybe think they do as I maybe used to?

for days ive been itching to reply to this ...the answer is a definate Hell Yes! sub space being an altered state of mind and one of my biggest "kinks " is hypnoslavery.. to alter your state of mind and to free your mind without pain is possibly one of the highest points a person can endure, it can take you to places you don't talk about in polite parties and to a focused thought climax for example for up to 24 hours in some cases....it not all about barking like a dog or stripping for an audience on command!...and its helped peoplego places they could only dream of...subspace included!

Happiness lies neither in vice nor in virtue; but in the manner we appreciate the one and the other, and the choice we make pursuant to our individual organization.

I was just posting about this on another board I contribute to the other day.

I don't think I've ever experienced someone going into subspace with me merely from pain. It's often from a combination of things. Pain can contribute to that.... but conversely, pain can often jump someone out of a particular space - which can also be a rather evil tool.

My submissives are far more likely to experience subspace through a look, a word, a trigger, a command from me than any form of pain play.

The above poster, talking about hypnotism, is very much where I'm coming from with this.

Of course, this sort of space works with those who identify as "submissive" rather than a "bottom".

there's animal play too...but i guess clawing, play fighting and biting (getting/giving) would be put under the "pain" category of getting into subspace.

Breathplay is a definite way to put me into subspace, especially if some poppers are introduced into the mix. Likewise heavy, cocooning bondage such as mummification or sleepsacks - something I can relax into and drift off. Animal play works for a lot of subs I've played with as an escape, but pupspace or similar always seemed quite different to subspace.

I think many people into D/s play use hypno techniques without even knowing. I know that I did - through common sense - before I'd read up on them. Although knowing what you are doing to someone and perfecting those techniques is always valuable.
