Following the mixed success of my previous effort, the picking up of a lady's glove, just this evening I had another experience on yet another German train.

I haven't yet read the above thread, but I am (probably) going to check it out. First, though, I'll contribute to this thread on its own merits.

I do find this kind of thing interesting. Whether there's any significance in things are… well, seem… insignificant… Especially when such things involve analysis of language.

Umm… on several counts!

Factory_slave wrote:
With friends, the word is “du”, but nowadays most younger people tend to use “du” when addressing one another.

They tend to use “du” when addressing one another from the outset of the conversation, correct?

Factory_slave wrote:

…I did overhear she was a twenty-two year old trainee teacher.

She was 22 years old… qualifying as a “younger person” surely?

Factory_slave wrote:

They did not know each other and had clearly struck up a conversation a few minutes before I turned up…

…and they had even progressed to the “du” stage…

…with their very informal conversation and use of “du”…

Progessed to the “du” stage? How do you know that they weren't using “du” rather than “sie” from the outset? Maybe the woman doesn't use the word “sie” in brief exchanges with people around her own age, regardless of whether or not they use “very formal German”.

I also liked her use of informal words in reply to my formal German. I would appreciate the thoughts of any German speakers about that.

The woman in question is “a younger person”, most of whom “tend to use “du” when addressing one another” (implicitly from the start of a conversation, correct?), you heard her using “du” early on in a conversation with a stranger, and you never heard her using “sie”…

And you're wondering if there's any significance in the fact that she used informal words when dealing with your good self?

Well, sure, significance, meaning, etc. is where we see/place/recognize/impose it... I've always said so... but…

I don't think that there is any reason to see any significance in it.

This is my favourite bit.

Yay!! I like that… I actually did laugh out loud, heartily, for several seconds.

First of all, breathless, thanks and respect for reading the language parts, because although boring to some they could have been relevant, and more to the point well done for seeing the humorous side too. I mean, abdominal snowmen don't normally feature in the heavy stuff.

Well, I will argue that younger people addressing elders, who they don't know well, will always use “Sie”. That is common throughout Germany. It doesn't bother me either way, but that's the rules for these folks. The fact she addressed me as “du” must mean all this cycling has paid off. What a compliment!

It's a good job she didn't flash a bit of naked thigh, else there could have been an international incident caused by exploding testicles.

areyouok, as it's your first post (and an excellent one if I may add), someone around here should make the effort and reply.

I think LOL means laughing out loud.

I hope I didn't cause any offence, I often appear to be rude when I'm merely trying to be amusing. Something I need to work on.

And there was me thinking LOL was 'lots of love'.

Honestly, no offence at all, areyouok. I'd rather read humour like yours than an Oprah-style lecture or worse some empty threat from a wannabe admin. Please keep posting.

p.s. Along with everyone else, I always appreciate the well-written responses from the likes of condemned, jules9, Inigo_Kroenen and Lady_Lucan but especially El Presidente, lima_pink_tigress and breathless. A lot of people make the effort to write thought-provoking and interesting posts, and such effort deserves more than one-liner mockery or a “LOL”. Keep posting folks.

Certainly sir & what did sir have in mind today? We have an excellent range of suicide pills, a cheeky little noose just in or of course our ever-popular a la carte firing squad. :¬)
