However there are times, especially when using Microsoft's products, where a word is worth a thousand pictures.

Adama: What do you hear, Starbuck?
Starbuck: Nothing but the rain, sir.
Adama: Then get your gun, and bring the cat in.
Starbuck: Boom boom boom.

I nearly always do, I'm too curious not to!

Although i disagree that people only ever post links so they can describe how they're feeling. I've never ever done that before,oo much of a faff! Easier to just say it, no matter how tumbled it might sound. If I post a link it's usually something amusing/cool I want to share with other people.

As for 'I never click on YouTube' links, is it really that big a deal.

I'd hate to think that I missed something I might have enjoyed just because I had a carte blanche policy of not clicking on YouTube links.

I don't have "a carte blanche policy" of not clicking on links. I treat them as I do these multiple forwarded e-mails that do the rounds. I tend to ignore most of them. And as for being afraid I'd missed something? No, that doesn't apply in my life.. mostly :-D

I almost never do. In fact I almost never follow any links, if someone wants to say something why don't they say it, instead of directing us to another site where someone else can say it for them?

The answer is simple. There are many hilariously funny videos on YouTube that could not be described satisfactorily using the written word. I've viewed many knot tying videos that are accompanied by a narrative. This made learning the knots so much easier than trying to follow a written description. Facial expression, music, colour and sound all evoke emotion and stimulate the senses in ways that the written word could not equal. THAT is why people post links. If your PC is suitably secure then you have nothing to fear from a link to YouTube.

My decision to not follow a link has nothing to do with computer safety. It is purely that, as you say, there are many hilariously funny videos on YouTube. Unfortunately these are many videos that other people find hilarious. Humour is a personal thing, not everyone finds the same things funny, nor does everyone find the same things of interest, or amusing, or cute.

I have no problem with people posting links if they wish to do so. In most cases they give no information at all about what the link is or why they posted it. In these cases a link on its own is not attractive enough to make me go see what they liked, especially since they haven't said if they like it or hate it, or if they find it funny, repulsive, twee, cute, technically amazing or just pure crap. If there is no information about it given, why bother to follow the link?
