Has anyone engraved a turian/eternity style collar? If so how did you do it and how did it turn out? |

What kind of steel? Suffering becomes beautiful when anyone bears great Calamities with cheerfulness, not through insensibility but through greatness of mind.

Stainless steel with a mirrored finish. My concern isn't so much the material as the fact that they are tubular in shape. Would like to know if anyone has had good results before I hand it over to a jewler for him to make a mess off. Edited 21 Jan 10, 7:46 PM by Toran1

Laser etching is quite effective but is difficult to do without a specialist machine, there are a number of places that offer this service, however without a sample it would be hard to guarantee quality.
If you wish to engrave the stainless you can use a dremmel style tool to grind impressions into the steel. Either a silicon carbide (blue) or aluminium oxide (green) stone will work fine, so do the orange and pink ones.. I forget the exact compositions. obviously a finer stone gives a finer finish, or you could mask the areas and grit blast a design onto the steel, this will leave a contrast between polished and dimpled.
Avoid using iron/steel tooling to work the stainless as there is a risk of pick-up from the tool, which may cause unsightly rusting on the site of the pick up.
You could also get the part black oxide coated and mask out the design... Not a process for the home user but very effective if done correctly, again there are places that can work with you on this...
You could really do to give us some idea of the sort of design you want to engrave, the composition of the stainless, te size and section of the part, etc etc.
One other method jumps to mind, you could stamp in the design either with a small press or with a hammer. Using commercial stamps or make your own...
good luck Cheers

In case anyone missed it,
this is the key point with this style of collar: they're circular in cross section, less than a centimetre in diameter.
(www.axsmar.com appear to be able to engrave the Turian collars they supply, incidentally.)

Are they solid metal? If so there is no issue with engraving them by physical abrasion/attrition/stamping. Laser etching will cause problem unless the machine is capable of 3d interpolation, in that the size of the fresnel zone will be large as the laser meets the high aspect slope causing unreliable results, to avoid this keep the etching small and along the equatorial zone..
If they are hollow, and of thin section, then stamping is right out and you will have a heck of a time with anything other than laser, black oxide, grit blasting, or similar processes.

Yes: both the Eternity and Axsmar ones.

I got my eternity wrist cuff engraved with my SLRN No. at a normal engravers in a shopping mall. It was no problem getting it done, even with it being tubular in shape... although we did get some raised eyebrows and awkward questions about what it was by a suspicious shopkeeper! I had the same question when I bought the one my girl wears.
One solution I considered, though not anywhere near as permanent as engraving, would be to get some clear, adhesive printer labels, print out whatever it is you want to put on the collar and simply stick it on.
Occurred to me that it would be a good way of getting the SLRN and barcode onto it without, as Robtex said, answering some difficult questions.
Failing that, there's a few pet stores dotted around which have a DIY dog tag engraving machine in-store. There's one not far from me. You can engrave whatever you want in pretty much complete privacy.
EDITED: cos I'm crap with names. You know they say it's always the quiet ones you have to watch? That's me.
