I spent a whole cheeky day in Manchester on Thursday, with nothing much to do, nowhere much to go and nothing much to spend. I had a great time!
I went to The Whitworth Art Gallery, The Manchester Museum and a library.
WAG was being refurbished, but was good for a mooch around. I really enjoyed the exhibition on trees and this odd thing they had upstairs where some artist had lived her life as a made up character and taken pictures, videos, done drawings, etc. I can't for the life of me remember her real or made up name, but it was very spooky and macabre.
TMM was great, as usual. I particularly liked the very small display of a very old slave-chain, found in Kent, dating back to 55BC or something.
I love libraries, as I've posted about before. This time I didn't go in to perv at the beatiful oak paneling, or long, shiny, solid tables, but to read. I sat and read poetry for an hour or so and nearly cried on my little plastic chair (not that it was *that* little - I wasn't in the kids section). Great stuff.
So... I rationalised you don't need a lot of money to enjoy yourself in this big city. There are free buses to get you from A to B around the city, so once you're in, I bet you could have a full day of entertainment on very little.
Please share where you know of that is both interesting/entertaining and cheap/free...
Apart from the above, I'll go first:
The Frog And Bucket Beat The Frog Night. It's on Monday nights in the Frog and Bucket and used to be a right laugh when I went as a student. They also did cheap pitchers of larger and ale, if I remember correctly.

Just off Deansgate, behind John Dalton House is a small, but quiet square, with seating. On a nice day, it is good to sit there and reflect on the history of Manchester. In the centre of that square is a statue of Abraham Lincoln, thanking the people of Manchester for their support and aid during the war on slavery. And only a few yards away, is The Hidden Gem, a small church well worth a look at.

I can't even begin to imagine what you might mean.
Was it free though? mia, x "Passion should believe itself irresistible. It should forget civility and consideration and all the other curses of a refined nature. Above all, it should never ask for leave where there is a right of way."

Loads of museums;
Urbis Which should be visited before they turn it into a football museum Museum of Science and Industry
There's also the Gallery of Costume, which is closed for the next few months The town hall is very beautiful inside, and I think you can pay a small fee for an official tour You can have a tour of the John Rylands for the princely sum of £1 China town and the ornamental gardens are very pretty too.
I heart Manchester

It's it funny the way the gift shop sells all the emo dolls etc, that appear to have nothing to do with the exhibitions, but lots to do with the skateboa^H^H^H paved garden area next to the building! Regards, Tanos www.tanos.org.uk

Despite it being 5 minutes from my office, I've not yet been. I might try and get there one lunchtime this week and let you know.
I do policemen so I should imagine it'll be good for me |
