Has anybody seen this movie? What do you think? This 70s film moved me immensely...I don't know what it was, the controversial topics that were approached (D/s in a Nazi concentration camp, homosexuality among Nazis, nudity, mental & physical cruelty, her self-annihilation, His dedication, etc) or my German background or just the acting of the two main characters...I was intoxicated and disgusted at the same time...oh and that scene when He puts his gloved fingers into her mouth while she's tied up and naked...*trembles*

Any comments?

I adore this film and you have inspired me to watch it again. It's so bitter-sweet and I will never forget her singing.

Anybody can be fabulous. You got a hump on your back? Put some glitter on it and have a party.

Wenn ich mir was wuenschen duerfte...

If i were to wish for something, What I should wish then, a bad, or a good time? If I were to wish for something, I would like to be just a little happy because if I were too happy I would long for suffering...

I beieve it's originally a song by Marlene Dietrich. I love it!!

I love it too! One of the BDSM finest! Shame Liliana Cavani hasn't made anything like it since.

When someone asks me what my favourite movie is, I always default to The Night Porter (although Bunuel's Belle de Jour is looming large now - not to be confused with the blogger of the same name who doesn't measure up - and I must not forget Seijun Suzuki's Branded to Kill).

I first watched The Night Porter at the cinema in Sydney in 1984, and saw it most recently at home only a few weeks ago (I own it, on video and DVD, of course). I've almost lost count of the times I've seen it. Every time I watch it, I see something new, and always enjoy so many intricacies. It's beautifully shot, and the story is captivating. And I hate happy endings, so it "ticks all the boxes" as the British are wont to say.

Cavani has made some other wonderful films, including Beyond Good and Evil (after Nietzsche), which I must see again.

I agree this is a seminal movie - when it first came out I was in my twenties and was very unsure what to make of it .... but it certainly made a big impression. I relate strongly to your comment about the tension between intoxication with the sensuality and revulsion with the context in which it takes place.

I would love to watch it again with people who felt the same way about it.

Love it. IMO the best (sort of mainstream) movie on bdsm ever made. Saw it for the first time when I was in my early 20 ties; it made a MAJOR impression that never could be equalled by other, later movies. Btw, it can be purchased online at Amazon.

A good film - long time since I saw it. I can still recall the scene in a cellar where Charlotte Rampling is made to sing and the Dirk Bogarde scene with the broken glass.

The older I get the more I recall.........how little I knew when I knew it all.
Nemesis II, alive and kicking.

A really great film with two really great actors in the central roles. It is the first of a "German Trilogy" which explored ideas of power and "perversion." The second film, Beyond Good And Evil is one of celluloids rare forays into Nietzsche. The Berlin Affair completed her triptych. Sadly though, Cavani has slumped to the lower depths of directing, with the sequel to The Talented Mr Ripley.

There is a torrent of The Night Porter at The Pirate Bay for anyone interested. It can be hard to find a decent DVD edition and thankfully the torrent comes from the outstanding Criterion Collection.

I'm disappointed to hear that you think she has "slumped to the lower depths" with Ripley. I, too, love The Night Porter for all the reasons that other have given, and Cavani's work. But I think that Patricia Highsmith's work is of the highest calibre compared to any genre, but here grasp of bdsm is faultless. Ripley is in some ways the ultimate D/s character and I can fully understand Cavani being attracted to the character.
