Saw this a few days ago and I have to say it was a really good movie. For those not familiar with it, it is the sequel to "Flags of our Fathers" - a film about the taking of Iwo Jima in WW2 and the media frenzy surrounding the raising of the flag (and the soldiers the military *thought* raised the flag)
Letters focuses on the battle for Iwo jima but from the Japanese perspective. It opens with a group of Japanese archaeologists finding a bag of letters written from the soldiers to their families. The letters are used to bridge the past lives of the soldiers with their fight on the island. The film is focussed on the characters both before and during the attack and comes across in a similar style to The thin Red Line. All in all I'd say that this film is similar to an American take on Das Boot - taking the opposite side and not only showing their side of the conflict but showing their human side too.
Not you usual jingoistic American war flick

I've read the book of "Flags of our Fathers" and seen the film. Interesting, poignant and sad all at the same time. I'm hoping to get round to watching the second film soon. In a similar vein to Band Of Brothers, there's a new mini series in the spring about the war in the Pacific... |
