It came up in discussion in the chatroom that every dog that played the role of "Lassie" in the much-loved movies was, in fact, male.
This lead to further discussion on the subject.
So - silly question:-
1. If a male dog plays a female dog in a movie (such as "Lassie"), does that technically make the dog a transvestite - or would that only be the case if the dog wore a pink collar?
And - possibly on a slightly more serious note:-
2. Are there creatures with specific male and female "gender roles", where sometimes animals act in the "other role" as part of normal, observed behaviour? In other words are there animals out there where there is definite "male behaviour" and "female behaviour" - but on occasion individuals CHOOSE to take on the "wrong" behaviour?

I don't know if this is the sort of thing you mean, but it amused me at the time I heard it, in New Scientist, I think. Male salmon are bigger than female salmon, so they thought, so that the biggest one can fight their way closest to the female salmon whilst spawning. They also though there were two female salmon to every male salmon. Until someone looked more closely and found that a quarter of male salmon are female-size, presumably so that they could actually get amongst the female salmon at spawning time, thus getting an even better chance of passing on their genes. The parallel with many TV and some TS girls who are by their nature attracted to women, not men, seemed quite apt.
