On Tuesday night I accompanied my friend Clare to a reading of her new book. She was one of three new female authors from the Northwest doing a performance at Tmesis bar in Manchester. The other authors were Helen Walsh, author of 'Brass', and… em… er… I can't remember, someone from Manchester I think.
The reason that I have trouble remembering names is that the event was actually cancelled at the eleventh hour. I don't know why. Something to do with the other authors or their publishing companies or something. Anyway, Clare decided that since there was no time to tell everyone of the cancellation, she would go down and do a reading, sign some books and generally shmooz around with people who have been nice enough to buy her book. That was the plan anyway.
I got to the bar slight early, only to find that it wasn't even open. It's a kind of gallery/bar and apparently only opens when there's an event on. Whoever had officially cancelled the gig must have rung the bar and told them not to bother. I managed to convince a few of the disappointed punters to stick around and wait for Clare and we all went to the pub down the road.
As it turned out we had a great night. Everyone who had stuck around was really interested in Clare's book and she spent the evening answering questions about what it takes to write a novel. It turned out to be more fun than the planned event would have been.
Clare's book "The Dying of Delight" is in my profile under 'Currently Reading' and her website is listed in my favourite links. The book is also available directly from Diva Direct (Diva being the publisher) at -

In other news…
Last weekend I was visited by my brother who lives in France. We spent all afternoon drinking in Manchester before finally arriving at the first ever "Funch" at Retro bar. We had a great night and lost many fine games of pool. My brother is not on the scene (he's 'nilla), but still had a top time drinking with a large group of Manchester's friendliest perv's. Roll on the next one.
Since I last wrote I've also been helping my dad build
a new roof on his kitchen. All went well and within
four days we had turned an old flat roof into a
slanting tiled masterpiece. I guess that his two years
of planning really paid off.
