i found some "Beechams flu-plus" powders in my first aid kit, they've probably been there at least a year....do they go "off"???
Also, are they like the capsules, in that you're not supposed to take more than X in every 4 hours or something? Only i've had about four sachets this morning (6hrs) !!!

Beechams contain paracetamol etc so you are taking more than you should. Got any honey and lemons in? They will soothe and ease your lurgy without taking any more paracetamol. Check the sachet packet for the expiry date but I think they last for several years unless they get damp. What is a Caracal? Edited 28 Dec 09, 11:30 AM by Caracal

Taking too much Paracetamol is very dangerous - taking more of it doesn't make a lot of difference on the pain management front, (you are better off stacking paracetamol, brufen and asprin if you need to do that),but the problem with too much paracetamol is the risk of irreversable liver damage and a slow painful death. If you have taken more than double the recommended dose you might be advised to check it out with NHS online..... The past is history, tomorrow is a mystery, the present is a gift.

Yup. You must not take more than 1g of paracetamol in 4 hours. Each sachet probably contains less than 500mg but you should double check. So if you have taken 2g in 6 hours you might be ok but to be honest if I was you I would at the very least give NHS 24 a call and double check. It's not worth the risk. Also Visualize mentions taking paracetamol, ibupropen and asprin. It's really important that you don't take ibuprophen and asprin at the same time. Both are Non steroidal anti immflamitory drugs (NSAIDs) so can damage your stomach lining if you mix them. Either stick to paracetamol and ibuprohen or paracetamol and asprin.

the packet says "Paracetamol 1000 mg Phenylephrine hydrochloride 12.2mg and Asprtame" though i think the aspartame is just sweetening ?
having now dredged up sufficient common-sense (
i know that's not ideal but at least it will keep me weeing so it should "dilute" the paracetamol a bit!!.....okay....so i'm not medically minded ooopsie...

Taking too much paracetamol isn't a good idea, and you should never take more than it says on the packet. Stacking it all in one go at the start of a 24 hour period isn't a good idea, but as long as you leave your body enough time to work through it, 4g shouldn't do irreversible damage at this stage. Just don't do it again, and stay off alcohol for a 24 hour period in the meantime too, as that puts pressure on your liver. If you feel at all sick to your stomach, or bloated, then contact NHS direct (0845 46 47). If you start looking yellow go to your doc or A&E. If you need to, you can layer paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine (not aspirin), as they all have different mechanisms. Codeine isn't much of a flu med though, it's mainly a pain relief, and can cause constipation (and some people like me are sensitive to it and go a little high). The best before date should be on the packets, and if it's significantly out of date it will be less effective. Give any out of date meds to your pharmacist, don't just throw them out in the trash, as animals can eat it when it gets to landfill! Two roads diverged in a wood and I, I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. (R. Frost)
