Was wondering, with our tradition for corporal punishment and the like, can us Brits consider ourselves to be the leaders in bdsm,or is there now plenty we can learn from other nations? I appreciate its a multinational sport these days, but i would just be interested in which countries are admired or renowned for it?Or is Great Britain the capital of bdsm?

Not even close,

From what i have seen the Canadians are far more "Serious" when it comes to most aspects of BDSM lifestyle and community protocol.

We seem to be dedicated and proficient from what I've seen, but rather more light-hearted than some.

Didn't flagellation used to be called 'the English vice'? I don't know how seriously they take it, but I had the distinct impression that the English were definitely kinkier than other countries - at least until the 1970s when bdsm seemed to take off in a big way in the US

Yes. The English gentleman is incomparable in his sadism, his arrogance, his chauvinism (Note to self: why is there no English term for chauvinism?) and his disdain for those whom he casually ill-treats.

Even the French, with their enviable international reputation for poor personal hygene and appalling manners, cannot compare to an English sadist in his selfish dedication to bringing pain, degradation and humiliation to the lower orders to keep them in their place.

Perhaps the most amusing aspect of all about the international image of sadomasochism is that the Nazis, including Hitler, Himmler, Goering, Hess etc., modelled themselves on the English aristocrat. In attempting to dominate the world by force, they were simply imitating the English, who already ruled a quarter of the world's population by naked military force and sadistic violence.

I think the same is true in the US.

It depends by what you mean 'more seriously'.

Most of the yanks I've gotten to know over the years do take their bdsm seriously (but that can often be because they take things in general a lot more seriously and at face value- sorry to generalise to all my american cousins out there).

We can see the humour and oddities associated with our perversions and activities perhaps a little better- but then saying that, I've met plenty of British kinksters who take themselves far too seriously for their own good

I'd agree with this.

Having said that, I've only played in the UK, the US and Canada, so I'm by no means an expert.

Edited to add: My personal experience has been that in Britain, the clothing and equipment are better and better maintained, the sense of community and the volume of events, munches and so on is better, the people are often more kind and welcoming and open-minded and there's more acceptance for the broad umbrella of choices and preferences.

FANTASTIC!! Haven't laughed so much in ages!! But seriously, English more serious about BDSM than other cultures? I know. From my limited experiences with BDSM in four other cultures (US, France, Australia and Germany) it's not a matter of nationality, history or cultural background but of a mental capacity, imagination, drive... ;-)

As the Marquis de Sade was French, surely our Gallic friends must have a thriving BDSM scene. And also what about Austria(Birthplace of Masoc),is there much happening there?
