Well I don't want to measure the exposure for a shot and then find the next time the flash fires it is different :(

With modern lights, it's really not like that.

Even the cheapest lights will be pretty much unnoticeable to the average eye, exposure wise.

Plus of course you can still push and pull images in the same way as film, so even the most minor lighting variations can be corrected.

Yes, that is my experience but the point was raised that some cheap flash lighting didn't give a consistent output and not having tried these lights I wouldn't know.

In case it's of any interest, Mick over on luvbight.com has a useful page on getting the most out of low cost items. Not sure how well it works as I I've not tried it out... yet. That day will come though.

I never found any inconsistencies with my Powerflash units, shooting on transparency film, but they were limited in the range of accessories and the softbox needed a counterbalance or the light would droop!

Is that the Jessops Powerflash units with the square bodies? I have used those with a softbox in the past and found it quite awkward. :)

Those are the ones. The clamp to lock the tilt isn't strong enough to hold the weight of the softbox so I first tried a counterbalance weight before settling for tying one end of a piece of string to the handle at the back of the light and the other end to the stand! 8-)

I've got 2 Bowens Gemini 500's and 2 250's. They have a good range of reflectors, diffusers and softboxes. I use a calumet radio trigger which seems to be OK upto about 1/125th. Then it gets a bit iffy, but it's not really a problem for me. As someone above said the locking mechanism struggles to support a softbox and they do tend to sag unless tightened VERY tight. I also use 2 Canon speed lights on or off camera on location and get good results.

You gotta keep pushing the edges.
