A modern day courtesan
Ever since I was very young, I was fascinated by the image of the classic Courtesan: a woman who builds a beguiling identity through her sexuality. She is rarely a prescribed beauty, or an “on command” sex worker who will do as expected by her client. On the contrary, good courtesans used to be sought after because they brought their own personality, interests and aura into the boudoir. Money can buy sex, but it can't buy good, interesting sex.
In times gone, when all a woman had was her body, she could get ahead in life if she had been blessed with good enough looks and a shrewd intelligence to make the most of them. Georgian London, a golden age of courtesans who set the fashion trends and were copied and imitated by the aristocracy, and who became them on occasion, is full of country wenches who became celebrated, auratic women of pleasure.
Of course, there are far more opportunities for women today. But the Courtesan is still a character that seduces and fascinates our minds, as it should be. She is still doing her job. We are fascinated by eroticism and by those who have the courage to explore their own without guilt or prejudice, who embrace their Inner Whores.
A courtesan has an inner world that shines through and informs her sexuality. She attracts men who are interested in more than a bit of fun: men who are looking for an accomplice to embark in a voyage with. I believe that Dominatrices are often this kind of woman, although of course, there is an army of exceptions, but also some glorious examples that I'm proud to call my friends and mentors. A Dominatrix needs to know who she is, and how to express it through the medium of BDSM. Dungeons, spanking benches, whips, are mere props to bring to life a fantasy where the mind is the most important sex organ. I became a pro-Domme because I'd always been interested in sex work, in developing a career in Erotica, so to speak. However, conventional escorts didn't attract me at all. I had the feeling that they were not expected to express themselves and their own sexual preferences, but in adapt themselves to their client's expectations. I'm too wilful, creative and odd for that. I knew that traditional courtesans were sought after precisely because they had opinions, personalities and distinctive tastes that enriched their peformance, and were very picky.
I found my medium in BDSM and have never looked back. First in my lifestyle incarnation, it discovered sides to me that I knew where there, but didn't have a name or an outlet. It also discovered tastes in me I didn't suspect I had, it uncovered hidden sensual depths, unsuspected alter egos, and a formidable figure started to form: Ms Tytania.
Like the Kitty Fishers, the Harriet Wilsons, the Perditas of yesteryear, I sought to find a place in the world where sexuality and in particular, niche sexualities, had a place of honour. Where a woman would be accepted and sought after by her erotic mind, and not criticised. The journey is long and there have been drawbacks and disappointments, but I've also met people, men and women, that I'd never have the opportunity to meet otherwise. I've helped a few come to terms with their les than orthodox sexual desires, to stop feeling guilty or inadequate about them. This is itself is a great achievement.
I look forward to the Courtesan's progress, what the future will hold because Ms Tytania is here to stay.
